      Ha...
One well placed EMP and we'll all be looking to the older folks on what to do.

I read in another thread about some school systems actually thinking of ridding the curriculum of cursive writing...on the thinking that it's a waste of time due to computers and keyboards.

Could you imagine what kind of shape we'd be in when we are so totally dependent(how about...NOW in some cases) and there actually was some sort of EMP attack or attack on the nations power grids?
      Yikes.

I LOVE my new tech...love it.
But I'm very glad that I'm "old school" in a lot of ways....JUST in case.
Just as it would be foolish to dismiss new ways and technology....I hope people realize you still need to know simpler techniques to accomplish things sometimes.

Great post. I remember when Hurricane Hugo came through and we were without power for a week. People damn near went crazy. And that was 1989. Can't imagine how people would react today.

Yeah you have lots of video games but when I was 10 years old we had complete freedom and didn't have controlling and paranoid parents planning everything you had to do like you were in the army.

Growing up in Toronto we played road hockey for 3 hours after school every day and there was no frantic parents calling the cops because we never came home from school. As long as you made it home for dinner. We had 90 minutes for lunch from school and everybody went home for it and most had both parents working so you had the house to yourself.

On weekends and summer holidays you went out all day with your buddies on your bikes or playing pick up game of all sports. You drank water off the tap, no cell phones to carry around and having to report in every hour or sunscreen plastered all over your body. We used to take the subway and walk around downtown at 12 years old with our friends. These days everybody stays inside the house playing video games all day and only go out to whatever extracirrucular activity thier parents signed them up for. If they go down the block they better not leave thier parents sight. No thanx, it's like a prison. Growing up then made us so much more mature because we were on our own so much and made us responsible young adults because we were street smart. Todays 20 year olds can text like a pro but half of them don't even know how to write a check or are hopelessly lost if they drive more than 5 miles away from thier house.

In the 80's being a teenager was great because the music was fantastic (new wave rocked) especially for nightclubs and the girls dressed in slutty skirts. When fights broke out it was mano a mano, no worrying that someone was gonna pull out a gun, at least not in Toronto. Gas and insurance were cheap so you could buy yourself a nice sporty car at 18.

Younger people now may have all the tech toys and gaming systems but it also made them socially ********.

I believe you need to keep yourself up to date always to be competitive, especially in the business world. But I have to admit, sometimes I just want to go back to more simpler times when I didn't need a cellphone to succeed.

And one of my best memories of childhood was at 13 or 14 and going downtown to Maple Leaf Gardes and catch the monthly wrestling show on a Sunday nite. Oh yeah the wrestling during the 80's was alot better too. It would just be 3 or 4 of us young teenagers (no adult escort because we were mature and our parents trusted us). We would buy tickets off scalpers and go to the back of the arena and heckle the wrestlers as they came in the back before the show. The wrestlers acted in character, heck one of my friends got the **** scared out of him by Terry Funk because he chanted JYD (who had a feud going on at the time) and when Hogan or the Macho Man appeared on the card it would be pandemonium as they got out of the limo.

We'd take the subway back after 11:00pm and then take the bus home from there. There was no real fear about being jumped by a gang of punks. There was no parents waiting to pick us up. My parents would be sleeping by the time I got home. I can't even imagine letting my 12 year old do that next year with his friends, he just seems way too immature and I would be way too paranoid. It's kinda sad that he will never experience trips like that with his friends without parents contolling the experience.

We got our full driver's license the day after we turned 16. We all, and I mean all, had part-time jobs (sometimes 2 of them) at 16 and had to because our parents wouldn't give us money anytime we asked. If we wanted spending money we had to work and juggle school at the same time. There was no pampering and that gave us character and we would save up and buy ourselves cars when we were 18 or 19 and it felt good because you know you earned it and gave us a great feeling of self worth. There were no tech toys to distract us and waste our money on, cars were what we all wanted. And once you had your own car you really became an adult because you didn't have to depend on anyone else to get around and the girls loved the fact that you bought your own car with your own money. It was a major chick magnet. These days it seems girls are impressed if you have alot of friends on Facebook. Boy have times changed.

That's what's missing with today's teenagers (obviously not all but a great many) they feel a sense of entitlement and us as parents are to blame. We give them money so they don't have to work and be distracted from school. Give them gas money whenever they ask. If I asked my dad at 18 for gas money he would of laughed at me. We knew the value of money and it really helped later in life. I see young people today with maxed out credit cards and they live at home, that was unthinkable when I was young. None of us had credit cards at 18. You spent what you had in your pocket. If that pocket was empty you didn't spend it. That sure helped preventing us getting into financial difficulty. Not to mention that ATM machines didn't really become popular, from what I remember, until I was 20 or so.

Ok I better stop now because I sound like my dad used to sound like.

Wow you are 40? That is so old! I am only 39, so I can't relate to your post

Now, I will say this, I had more fun with the Atari 2600 playing "Combat" and other games than I have ever had with these new systems. "Pitfall" was the bomb too!!

Had a blast, we even played when the Night Stalker was around. Crazier story I meet that nut as a kid. He went to my brother's highschool and work at the local movie theater.

I was in that Hurricane. I was 6 years old at the time. We moved back to Ohio because of the destruction it did to our house. I dont remember much from that day but i do remember it being day time and it was damn near pitch black outside.

I'm 39 and don't have the feeling that I'm going to miss out on what's next. I have four boys so they can have at the future and all it holds. Their kids can go on from there etc. etc.

I like what technology brings to life and gaming, but it's also interesting to look from where it all came. Not just in technology but in many avenues we have come a long way in the last 100 years. I do sense though that our culture borderline desensitized by some things and almost void of appreciating things as they are. Every thing is either "Oh my God incredible" or "absolute garbage." Reminds me of this...

I was in 8th grade, and I just got Dragon Warrior for the NES for my birthday. By the time I got home, the hurricane hit and we were without power for a week. It was a pretty scary night, the chimney blew off of our apartment building and trees were failing all around our us. That was so rare because that was the only time I ever remember a hurricane coming in that far inland.

Love that Louie CK bit. He is my favorite comedian.

I remember watching that live on TV, it happened during the introductions if I remember correctly. That was very scary.
