Re: Moneyball - The Movie
Was a pretty good movie, not something I'd go out of my way to watch again, but I'm glad a saw it. Pitt gave a solid performance, but some of the writing is either poor or inaccurate as to what actually happened.
There was a big part early in the movie with Beane wanting to sign Hatteberg, Justice, and Jeremy Giambi. Giambi was already on the A's for the past 2 years, so there was no need for them to go sign him. Also one part where Beane is arguing with Art Howe on wanting him to use Chad Bradford, to which Howe says he wanted to use a lefty because of the matchups. Beane replies something to the effect of "I don't care about lefty/right matchups" which is completely untrue of the actual Billy Beane.
It really is impressive that they made an overall good movie though. It's a sport movie nearly absent on any in game scenes, just mainly built on the behind the scenes decisions of a front office.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

I'm going to watch it tonight. Looking forward to it.
Edit: After watching the flik, that part does make it look like Giambi wasnt with the team already.Last edited by Mabster; 09-25-2011, 02:11 PM.Oakland Athletics San Jose Sharks

Re: Moneyball - The Movie
While the movie has received glowing reviews, I thought it was just a solid film.
Pitt was great but nothing really exciting happens. The Peter Brand character was also nothing like Paul DePodesta.Comment

Re: Moneyball - The Movie
There were two things I liked about this film, and that was how they made a night game darker looking with less lights in the stadium, to cause dramatic effect. Second, they made some parts of the movie slower, almost like a dramatic pause, to cause more drama. I can't explain it. There were about two parts of the movie that seemed to slow down.Comment

Re: Moneyball - The Movie
This one gets a 9/10 from me. I really like how they put so much emphasis on "the streak" and what a huge role that played in getting the fans behind the team after their rocky start that year. The only bummer is that I was hoping that Philip Seymour Hoffman (my favorite actor in the universe) would have had more screen time. I hear Art Howe is planning to sue the film's producers based on him not liking the way he was depicted in the film. Oh well!Comment

Re: Moneyball - The Movie
Saw this last night, and I was surprised with how good it was. I've had trouble staying interested with baseball lately, so I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. I'm not the biggest Pitt fan but he was really good in this movie.
It was a very emotional journey with lots of reflective scenes that really worked well. I have to say as a sports movie I really enjoyed this. I like how they didn't "dumb down" the stats terminology too much. There were some funny bits sprinkled in but overall I think anyone could relate to this movie, even if they aren't the biggest baseball fan.
One final thing that struck me was how great the performances were with the players (especially Hatteberg) as well as John Henry. And as much as I like him usually I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman was the weak link, but maybe that's because he looked NOTHING like Art Howe to me.Comment

Re: Moneyball - The Movie
Loved it.
And I'm the complete opposite with Hoffman. I forgot that was even him. I know there are maybe two or three other guys that fall into this category for me (but I couldn't tell you who they are for obvious reasons): I never recognize Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
I think he's just phenomenal. Always a different person. In. Every. Role.
As for Brad Pitt, I stopped being surprised by him. He's a great actor who I think at times gets forgotten by most men because he is immediately cast as the good-looking womanizer that only gets roles to sell female tickets. Nah, this guy can act. Does he still get roles to sell female tickets? Sure. But, I'd watch him in almost anything. He's just good at what he does.
Great story. I know some people have mentioned some pacing issues. To me, it can be slow, but I think someone here mentioned it's like a baseball game. It really has that emotional up and down of a game."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
