Nick Charles dies at age 64 after a battle with bladder cancer

Another part of my younger years is gone now. I used to watch Charles and Fred Hickman doing the CNN Sports Tonight show. In fact, I would say their chemistry on the air and the way the show flowed rivaled anything ESPN put up on the 11 PM Sportscenter at that time.

Charles was not only a great sportscaster doing highlights but he was a helluva boxing guy and was one of the people that has helped Mike Tyson in the last few years in cleaning up his life a bit.

R.I.P. and condolences go out to the Charles family.

Thanks for sharing this! Sad to hear. I'm 39, so I remember everything you posted here with clarity as well. I always liked him. Many here don't know what it was like to get limited sports news and Nick Charles was the voice that many of us will remember.

I knew he was ill, but not to this extent. Good guy...will be missed!

I guess he was very close friends with Mike Tyson. I was searching through YouTube earlier to look at old clips of Nick and came across this video which is only from a few weeks ago. You really see a soft side of Mike Tyson here:

I watched a clip on CNN a few months ago that chronicled his battle with cancer and his outlook on life. You can't help but be moved by the piece.

I was misty eyed and had a big lump in my throat after watching. Rest in peace, Nick Charles. Class act all the way!
