That's a good point, Blzer. Things like this sometimes create new practices. People in and out of the industry thought Netflix wouldnt work. "Who'd want to pay a fee to wait for their movie in the mail?" Turns out millions did and then Netflix added millions more with Instant Watch.

Right now this sounds insane but what if the price of a movie becomes too much for a frequent movie watching individual? What if this entices members to watch more movies in theaters and they end up wondering how they watched movies without it?

It's only the beginning. A similar subscription service program is actually used in the UK to very good results. Average ticket price there is nearly $20 and a service like this saves people lots of money.

It may not be too long where this makes sense for millions of people. Today? No. Tomorrow? Maybe.

Re: MoviePass - Subscription Service for Films

If this was an online or VOD cable service it would be insanely successful but not in theatres, where not to many "big" movies come out to often. The average person doesn't go to the movies enough to make this worth it just because there aren't to many movies in my opinion people want to see in a given month. People who do go to alot of movies probably are into more indy/arthouse stuff that aren't necessarily shown in mainstream theaters.

From what I understand, they are gonna push to get this in all theaters.

Yes, I agree that the artsy film types would rush to use this. Those types are probably watching movies nearly every day. Makes sense for them.

Anyway, I figured this would be the response. I think right now American audiences just don't watch enough movies to warrant this service.

And many are patient. We already pay for Netflix. Sucker Punch is already hitting DVD. A movie with mixed reviews and I only had to wait three months to check it out at home.

If this was a streaming service then $50 would be a great deal, but having to pay that fee per person for actual tickets, and then still having to go to the theater kills the deal.

If two people go once per week at night (in my area): $21.00 x 4 = $84

This pass would cost $100 for two people.

Of course this pass would provide unlimited trips I assume, but there are not many couples I know who have time to go more than once per week (if that).

It took me 3/4 of the thread to realize this isn't a VOD service.

Definitely not worth it for me. Tickets here are $5 for students.

Well, there goes an interesting turn of events.

AMC is not participating in MoviePass. They report that the program was created without first consulting them and they believe the subscription based service would create guest experience issues.

AMC is one of the largest theater chains in the nation, so their refusal to acknowledge passes from MoviePass is a huge blow to the company.

Another update reports that all of the companies, including Landmark, Camera Cinemas and Big Cinemas Towne 3, listed as participants in MoviePass will refuse to honor all subscriptions.

So, unless things change quickly, MoviePass might be dead.

yeah there not enough good movies that come out in a month to warrant this. Haha I too thought this was a streaming service which I would be down to do for sure.

And as much as I try to resist, I always get popcorn so thats another cost that I tack on when going to the movie.

It may be one of the larger chains in the nation, but Cinemark is the primary theater business in the Bay Area. I don't have an AMC theater within a half hour of me, and I'm literally five minutes from dipping my toes into the San Francisco Bay (not that I live in San Francisco, but it stretches across multiple cities, go figure).

In short, this "beta-testing" still might be successful in the Bay Area, even without AMC.

I don't see the need for this to be a third party service. If AMC wants to come up with some kind of movie pass they can do it themselves and not have to pay a percentage to some service.

This would be perfect for me, but only during the summer months (June and July). Those are the months of the summer blockbusters.

Otherwise, it's not worth it. Don't have the time to just go to the movies, just to go. Can't see there being 5-6 movies worth seeing every month to make this a good deal to keep after the summer is over.
