Really? I thought there was some horrible over acting. From everyone of them. I just felt forced, like they were each trying to force the roles onto the characters a bit too much for a first episode. I though it was terrible. But I like shows that recently got cancelled like the Chicago Code and Outsourced so I don't really know anything about what makes a good new TV series.

I've seen Zooey in so many things I think I just get her acting at this point. I don't even really think she's that good of an actor. But I did like her character.
I thought each of the guy's was good except for the douchbag guy. I'm also not sure how some of the things he said would be considered a douchbag comment - but that's story, not acting. His acting left me underwhelmed.
And sure there were forced moments like the "emotional" dinner scene. "We care about you." I found that rather improbable considering they just met her. A better line could have been used like: "We wanted to check up on you." That would have also been a little more subtle and less obvious that they are beginning to see her as a good friend, but you can't always win the writing war in television.
[edit]
Also, it was way too obvious they are trying to push one of the guy's as a love interest. Not even in just the things he said, but the camera shots were clearly pushing for the audience to think: "Aww, he likes her."
Subtlety be damned in this series. I'll see how long I can put up with that.
[/edit]
I found myself laughing quite a bit and I'm happy someone is doing a show about this sort of girl character because no one ever does.
If you didn't like it, that's cool. I also thought Outsourced was incredibly bad so them tastes strike again.Last edited by CMH; 09-14-2011, 07:54 AM."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: New Girl (FOX)
The episode wasn't bad. It is a pilot episode, so obviously everything is very raw and unpolished. There is some definite potential here and surprisingly I like the cast.
My biggest problem with the episode was how quickly they latched onto her. It just seemed rushed to get her into the apartment and build a relationship with these guys with really no time or effort. Like CMH said, abandoning the party to go make her feel better was a big stretch.
I also don't understand the douchebag guy role. I wouldn't consider him a douchebag because everything he said was so corny and contrived that its hard to believe he is serious at all. There was only one line that was a good douchebag line and that was the party-hat line. I totally understand his women chasing and wanting to look cool in front of his other "friends," but to see him acting like that all the time is a little much and its hard to believe he's friends with the other two guys.

I get it when shows want these very different characters, but sometimes it goes too far because you have to wonder, as you said: Why would these guys be friends with someone like that?
I understand it if the characters are younger, still trying to figure themselves out. But, late 20-somethings that seem to have a grasp on their lives should not be in a position where they can't figure out what they do and do not like about others.
The douchebag character doesn't fit the personalities of the other two men. I would have liked it better if he was a roommate that they did not really like too much. They can still hang out because roommates do that, but these three act like best of friends. It's an awkward mix of people."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. It felt like it was supposed to be an hour long episode that they cut down to 30 minutes at the last second.Comment

Re: New Girl (FOX)
The dialogue for the male characters was off. I found out Liz Meriwether wrote the pilot herself so that was probably why I didn't like it.
I was a little disappointed in the first episode. I'm going to stick around because of Deschanel though.
All the ads worked for Fox because the show had over 10 million viewers last night. If the show can keep %70 of its audience next week, I think it's a lock we get a full season.Comment

Re: New Girl (FOX)
The story telling engine (to borrow a term coined by comics blogosphere personality John Seavey) isn't a very strong one. I mean eventually they're going to have to give Zoey a guy to date and calm down some of her eccentricities because if they go with the current setup too long it'll become very tired. The show feels more tailored to a 90 minute movie rather than an ongoing TV series.
That being said I can see some potential. I liked the development of the Nick character and I could see him falling for Zoey's character very easily. The Schmidt character is a real bastard and in some ways isn't very likable but I think it can create some comedic moments. Let's face it though, this show is here to display Deschanel's talents and that's about it.
I'm going to give it a shot but there definitely needs to be a bit of a status quo change at some point early on in the series if it lasts a full season or more.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I think Nick ends up falling for her and it becomes the story that everyone goes back to as Zooey's character falls in and out of love with other men.

Which is not something I'd want to see. I found his character to be the most annoying of the 3 guys. I just don't like that actor.Comment

I think this thread did me some good because I was really looking forward to the show then you guys dampened my expectations. I ended up enjoying the show, I thought most of it was funny and will continue to watch.

Which one was Nick, the douche or the one hung up on his ex?

Re: New Girl (FOX)
More annoying than Schmidt? I actually thought Nick was a good guy but has a couple emotional hang ups but not stupid annoying like Schmidt or somewhat nebulous like Coach.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
