Does OS have any wetshavers/DE shavers in the house?

I've been into wetshaving for a few years now and recently got into shaving with a double-edged safety razor (mine is a 1966 Gillette Slim Adjustable). I was perusing the forums on a shaving site and realized how long it had been since I had been a regular contributor to a message board. OS was always my main online community, so I now pose the question to you: are there any wetshavers here?

What do you mean by wet shaving? Is this the same as dry shaving where you don't use shaving cream and just use water?

Do you really care where I sent this from?

I just got into wetshaving about 2 months ago. I use a DE Merkur 23C with Personna Medprep blades and I also use a Merkur Slant but having a tough time with it. Brush wise I use a Simpsons Berkeley and Cella soap.

Wetshaving is using a safety razor (double edge or single edge blade) or a straight razor along with a shaving soap or creme usually applied by using a shaving brush.

What is the benefit of wetshaving? Razors are so damn expensive anymore, I might have to change.

It is a cheaper, better shave IMO. Have to be careful when you're starting out though.

                Tendrils,

Here is a quick rundown of wet shaving: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaving...22_wet_shaving

I get most of my supplies from Amazon, eBay (for the razor), West Coast Shaving and BestShave.net. I just found a shave store in Oklahoma City yesterday that will be "my Ikea" as my wife put it. To put the costs in perspective, I bought 100 Israeli Personna Red blades (good for at LEAST three shaves per blade) for $16. I bought 300 Lord brand Shark Super Stainless blades for $21 with free shipping from Turkey. My razor cost me $23 on eBay but it was made in 1966 and will last another 40 years with its construction.

I use a badger hair brush that I got for $40. It's made by Edwin Jagger and works extremely well. Rather than using a canned shaving cream, traditional wetshaving involves using a brush to lather up a shave soap or shave cream in a tube or tub. One "puck" of Colonel Conk's shave soap costs about $2.50 and lasts for months. It also doesn't have the aerosols and preservatives that most canned creams have. A large tube of Proraso (or Bath & Body Works' C.O. Bigelow, they're made by the same company) runs $10, but it will last forever.

www.BadgerAndBlade.com has a great wiki to answer any questions relating to shaving. "Mantic59" on YouTube has become like the DE shaving Yoda. Check out his videos.

                Fishepa:

I use a 1966 Gillette Slim Adjustable that I got on eBay. I started with a Merkur 34C (I think). I really love the adjustable though.

Here is the store I found in OKC: www.CarwinsShaveShop.com

My father is a barber and he does them in his shop; although, not many request. He has done it on me a few times. The whole experience is something I look on as something special.

I'm sort of over the top about grooming products for men. The whole shaving experience is special to me.

I would like to get an old-fashioned barber shop straight razor shave. I hear there is one place here in town that does it, but I'm too busy right now. I move in a few weeks, so maybe after things settle down. Everyone tells me to switch to a straight razor, but I just can't see myself doing it. Not yet, at least.

It might be something you can gradually move into. I don't do it and really would have to work my way into doing it everyday. Preparation is important. Even with my normal razor, I spend a good amount of time preparing my face for the shave. But maybe it's something you can do on a weekend.

I'm fine with having a lot of preparation. I do a lot of prep for my DE shaves each morning (with longer time spent on weekends). Perhaps straight razor shaves on the weekends wouldn't be bad, but I worry about rushing it during the week.

I was talking to my co-worker the other day in regards to shaving. He told me he was using a straight razor. Of course, this would be for my head because my face could never take this type of shaving. At any rate, I'm looking for any bit of advice on how to get into straight razor shaving. Much cheaper from what I hear and much more satisfying. I don't exactly know how I would maintain. There are two type of straight razors right? The one with the disposable edges and the other that you have to hone?

Funny...but I have never used shaving cream or an electric razor in my life.

I've always shaved with just plain hot water and a triple edged disposable blade.

I say funny....because when I was 13 or 14....I was obsessed with buying this hot shaving cream dispenser from a men's accessories shop my father went to.

They use one of those at the place I get my hair cut. They use a straight razor to do the back of the neck and use the hot shaving cream beforehand.

I'd never buy it myself, but it does feel pretty nice lol

I've used electric in the past, but now just use a Gillette Fusion and shaving cream. Always tempted to try something like this but never get the motivation to actually do it.
