My Macbook Air HD is dead - should I take to Apple store?

...or get it fixed somewhere else online for cheaper? Is there any reason to get it fixed by the official Apple folks? Just wondering. I've never had anything go wrong with my Apple stuff before so it's not been an issue....

If they replace my hard disk and reinstall the OS and all, is there a warranty on that work and if so, how long?

I would just take it to the Apple Store. They may offer you an extended warranty or new warranty.
