    My quadcopter

I found this website, diydrones.com and decided to go ahead and build a quadcopter. They have everything laid out for you to follow in order to successfully built it. However, you have to be pretty handy with a soldering iron and electronics. But, if you follow their instructions they make it pretty easy. Plus I think you can buy an already soldered and tested arducopter board and IMU.
With my quadcopter, I like to fly it around and mainly take videos of the surrounding area. Here's some pics and videos.

It can be pretty expensive. I saved money and bought pieces throughout the year. The arducopter board and IMU is about $250, motors are $15 a piece (for 4 motors it's $60), ESC are about $15 each (electronic speed control to control each motor), receiver and transmitter is about $60, plus battery around $30 or so depending on size, and then you need a frame which can range from a cheap homemade one from home depot to a carbon fiber one which is around $250. Then you need a battery charger which is around $40.

Of course, there are already built ones for over $1000 if you don't want to go through all the hassle of building it yourself.
