No Sounds from my iPad while charging???

I'm on the road on a job and bought an alarm clock app for my ipad, the only problem is it's not gone off the last two days at all and I realized that I get no sound at all while the ipad is on power and charging. I obviously can't leave it off power all night with the app running full screen so does anyone know what's going on with the sound not working when it's on the power??? Is this a setting or something?

Doing a google search I found a thread that said there was some issues with some iPads thinking headphones where plugged in if the unit was plugged into a power source. I didn't go much beyond that point, but it could be something to look into.
