Help! New Nasty Virus Called Protection Security

I just received a nasty virus on my computer downstairs called Protection Security. The darn virus won't allow me to click on the net, system restore, etc....etc...

I have googled this beast and read up on it. One suggestion was to run it in SafeMode with Networks, but it sounded complicated to me.

Any suggestions before I spend $60.00 to the computer doctor. I have the system shut down for now.

If someone has a solution, a step by step would be beneficial for Mr. Average Computer guy here.

    Thank you.

Security Protection is a rogue anti-spyware program from the same family as Malware Protection. This rogue displays false scan results in order to trick you into thinking that your computer is infected. When this infection is installed on your computer it will be configured to start automatically. Once started it will scan your computer and list numerous infections, but if you attempt to remove any of these so-called infections it will state that you first need to purchase the program in order to remove anything. As these scan results are all fake, please do not purchase this program based upon anything it states.

That's a decently documented walkthrough to get rid of it.

Thanks Sneep, not sure how I did it, but it's gone.

I just recently updated Avast,(think that is how it came onto the computer in the first place) and so I ran a long scan. Surprisingly, the virus allowed me to run Avast, but not System Restore, internet, I even tried msconfig because I couldn't get into safe mode by tapping F8.

The scan found 3 high ranked viruses, so, naturally I deleted them. I ran a short scan and a boot scan as well. I then noticed by hitting maintenance on Avast that Avast wasn't up to date on programs. Updated Avasted, rebooted computer and the virus was gone.

      Glad I saved $60 bucks.

These things are annoying as hell. I wonder how much money is wasted by people who either actually give the thing their CC number to buy the "protection" or spend money on having the Geek Squad fix their problem.

Re: Help! New Nasty Virus Called Protection Security

And almost 3 months later, I have another one.

Wow, getting frustrated about the back to back crap.

This one is called AV Protection 2011.

Tried system restore once and that didn't work. Tried booting up in safe mode and wasn't successful the first time.

So, then I tried system restore again. A warning came up, and this time I ignored it instead of clicking it off. I continued with system restore and I couldn't believe restore kept going. Set it back 2 days and restarted computer and the nasty critter was gone.

I'm running avast on it, but it's starting to become a pain in the butt if I'm going to keep getting nasty's every three months.

Our youngest goes to You Tube a lot, maybe that is it, don't really know, though.

Any other suggestions to keep it clean. Thanks.

              It's not from YouTube.

Do you have kids in the 13-18 range? That could explain it.

Yeah, 2 teenage boys. mmmmm, guess it's time for a father/son talk, huh.

One is 12, the other is 16. The 12 yr old is on it the most and I would never suspect him.

Are adblockers running on all the browsers they use?

Are their user accounts limited access? (not administrator)

I recommend running something like Malwarebytes Pro. The free version is fine for on-demand scanning if you're a careful user, but the real-time stuff is better for kiddies that are click happy.

I also recommend Malwarebytes...my personal favorite antivirus software.

I got hit with a really nasty virus a little more than a week ago. I had to do a bunch of crap. Antivirus programs, regedit, msconfig, the whole nine.

Definitely get a popup blocker for all of your browsers. From my experience, these rogue antiviruses come from popups and many of my friends have got them while on facebook.

If you're looking to switch antiviruses, I use Microsoft Security Essentials. M$ finally did something right and it's free.99. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...ity-essentials

This with Windows Firewall has given me no problems. It's not near as annoying as some of the other antiviruses I've used either.

Re: Help! New Nasty Virus Called Protection Security

                        Guys,

                        Thanks for the great tips.

On the computer downstairs, I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy and Ccleaner, the free versions. I also have ad-aware and avast running.

If you were me, would you get rid of Ccleaner, Ad-aware and Spybot and just replace it with MS Essentials or the Malewarebytes Pro.

Just added FF's adblock pro as the youngest one goes to a website called League of Legends owned by Riot Games and Ccleaner found a lot of unwanted files of that in the registry.

Thanks again for the great help, very much appreciated.
