Is there an app for this?

One of my dad's post-chemo goals is to run a 5k. I'm not in the best of shape myself but I told him that I'd do it with him. We located a "Couch-to-5k" workout online that I think is do-able. The first week's workouts are a 5 min brisk walk to warm up followed by alternating 60 sec jog and 90 sec walk for a total of 20 minutes and the weeks following are pretty similar.

Anyway, I'm not a runner so any entertainment is welcome...such as my iPod. But here's the thing...how do I keep track of my times for alternating? If I've got my iPod on, I likely won't here a timer go off but if I don't, I know that I'll be counting the seconds in my head (which will make it DRAG). I found a way to do it by editing the start/end times for a bunch of songs and put them in a playlist. When the song changes, I need to switch. It's not too bad that way. However, it edits that song in the general library so it cuts short in any of my other playlists as well. Is there a way to do it so that it only applies to that specific playlist? Better yet, is there an app out there (iPhone or Android) that will allow me to select a playlist or do a "Shuffle All" for something like this?

I'm open to any other suggestions...

Have you tried the Nike+ app for iPhone/iPod?

You can play whatever music and it should tell you when you've reached your goal.

I haven't, primarily because I thought it required some special hardware or something. If not, I'll give it a look. Thanks, Pared!

I think you need the foot receiver but the app may work without it.

The foot sensor tracks distance.

There may be apps that track GPS distance but the foot sensor is most likely a lot more accurate.

Edit: Yup, you need the foot sensor but the app does exactly what you're asking for.

If you have an Android, search C25K on the market and the one by Guy Hoffman is free and it claims that it will chime into your headphones when you need to change pace.

It doesn't look as clean as the real version, but it's free and says it chimes.

Thanks guys. HHH, I did find both of those apps last night. The free one works fine except it needs to stay in the foreground. If you start the timer and then go to pick your music, the timer resets. I think I'll be going that route but need to find a belt clip or something for my phone to secure it while I'm running. Also, I'll have to see how well it works with Google Music while I'm around the neighborhood.

iMapMyRun is the running app I use. It uses the GPS to map out where you run. Keeps track of the distance and time, calculating your pace. Estimates how many calories you've burned. It also stops when you stand stationary. I absolutely love it.
