Re: Drive
SpoilerFracture was great until the last 20-30 minutes with too many legal inaccuracies/holes imo. Been a while since I've seen it though but that was my irritation with it towards the end. I may have to watch that againEA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.Comment

Re: Drive
Actually I thought the movie was OK but Gosling's performance alone elevated it and makes it rewatchable and he totally dwarfs Hopkins which is not an easy thing to do to an old pro like Sir Anthony.
There's another movie out last year with Gosling and Kirsten Dunst based on a true story about a guy killing his wife that I heard good things about from friends but I can't recall the title. Anybody know?Comment

Re: Drive
I totally agree with you, Seymour, on the pacing. The slow pace in the beginning is clearly done on purpose as it allows the tension to build and build until every thing just explodes. It reminded me a lot of a film like No Country For Old Men, where you just have an uneasy feeling that some real bad **** is about to happen.Comment

Re: Drive
Just saw this on the weekend and this is the best movie I've seen from 2011. How did the movie, the director, Gosling and Brooks (Jonah Hill does? WTF?) not get nominated for Oscars is beyond me.
Pacing was perfect because if you thought the 1st half was slow, I believe that was intentional to magnify the impact of the 2nd half to make the violence that much more jarring. Tarantino does this all the time where he will slow the pacing to a crawl just so the next violent scene hits you in the face.
The opening chase scene and the elevator scene was brilliant and will only become more appreciated as time passes. They don't make action thrillers like this much anymore, everything seems to be geared toward the ADD crowd these days where no more than 10 minutes must pass without an action scene.
Yeah there was a gruesome scene here and there but I think that was needed to show that Gosling really was a psychopath albeit a one with his heart in the right place.
Gosling is the man of the hour in Hollywood right now. I remember seeing him as a teen in some Canadian show (Breaker High maybe? don't ask me how I could remember that.) about kids on a cruise ship and as Young Hercules and thought he had a screen presence but I didn't think he would become the hottest thing in Hollywood who overshadows everyone he acts with including Clooney and Hopkins.
I mentioned this in the Movies You've Seen Lately thread that I really appreciated the less is more with the storytelling. Light on dialogue but what was said meant something. Otherwise, the story was told with camera shots, editing and facial expressions. Great, great job by all parties.
That soundtrack was outstanding, too. Loved the 80's vibe. I need to get those songs on my iPod.
Gosling is on a roll right now. I made fun of this guy for The Notebook but recently, he's been in some great films.Currently Playing:

Re: Drive
I saw Drive at a late night showing at a tiny independent cinema in Edinburgh, Scotland in late September. Needless to say it's profile has increased somewhat since then. I instantly loved it, besides the cast the direction and production is absolutely top notch. Winding Rehn is gaining a reputation for this.
Unfortunately it's become a bit of a cult fad. I've heard people calling it an action film and quoting the deliberately corny line that the driver gives his clients, etc as if that's central to the plot in the slightest. I really hope it doesn't begin to be regarded as the Pulp Fiction of the generation or something. It's a character study first and foremost and a great one at that.
I fully agree with the praise of the soundtrack. Interesting piece of trivia for anybody who watches a lot of movies is that quite a bit of the ambient score - which is uncredited and not featured on the soundtrack - is used in the Social Network. You might notice this during the scene where gosling is Jimmying the lock on the Mustang which he uses for the robbery with Standard Gabriel.
Easily one of the best films thus far in the 21st century. After Half Nelson, Blue Valentine and Drive, I have fully forgiven Gosling for the Notebook.Last edited by TuffGnarl; 02-22-2012, 05:20 PM.Comment

Re: Drive
The more exposure this film gets the merrier because it will increase the chances of a sequel, to which one would make perfect sense considering how much Driver draws on the classic cult action heroes of the late 60s and 70s.
There's no way it will end up being Pulp Fiction status just for the simple fact that Pulp Fiction's entire script is quotable, whereas Drive has maybe 2,000 words.

Having just seen The notebook for the first time, Gosling's performance in that is actually incredible. Dude is a fantastic actor, and that is the understatement of the century.Comment

Re: Drive
Just by most critics reactions I think the green light will be easily given for a sequal if Gosling wants to do it but with him you never know. He's known to march to his own beat and may beg off on it. This wasn't a big budgeted movie and sequals have been made for alot lessor movies.
Although I'm a big fan of Gosling I thought his performance in the Notebook was sub par and he acted very wooden. The dialogue wasn't the greatest and maybe the director wanted him to act that way but I thought he put on a better performance as Young Hercules than what he showed in The Notebook. It definately wasn't his shining moment.Comment
