    ** The X Factor: Season 1 ***

I've been waiting for this show since Simon left AI and announced he would be launching The X Factor in the US.

While Steven and Jennifer weren't as bad as I thought they would be on AI, I still missed Simon.

I have a feeling this show is going to be a huge success.

I like the idea of different categories, gives a chance for any person/group to really show off their singing talent.

This show will be successful, all you need is Simon and talent. With 5 mil on the line and wider range of contesntants, its gonna happen.

It also doesn't hurt to see Nicole Scherzinger every episode.

I think they knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to bring this show to the U.S.

Simon, Paula, a dude that's style is similar to Randy and it's on fox.

His personality is nothing like Randy's, though.. very dry and boring.

I've only watched the first hour but I'm very disappointed. The AI auditions feel a lot more personal with the back stories and only singing in front of the judges (with no beats/band).

I thought I would really enjoy this show but there's a good chance I drop out after the first week.

I was disappointed as well. The show seemed to drag on and on. There also didn't seem to be any performances that made me go WOW compared to other versions of the show. I do like how the auditions work, and I like the concept of the show (I've followed the UK version in the past).

At this point it seems like it would be better just to catch the main parts the next day on YouTube instead of watching the whole thing.

The show feels too "big" too early. It doesn't feel personal enough for me once you add in the big audience.

I also don't like the fact you have little kids and old people in this competition. I have no interest in watching 13 and 42 year olds trying to win. It also seems there's less banter between the judges before they vote.

I thought it was great myself. It felt enough like American Idol to feel familiar but yet felt fresh and it was great to have Simon and Paula back together again. I really enjoyed the show, the 2 hours just flew by. I'm definitely a new fan. To hell with American Idol!!

P.S. - My two favorite ppl were the woman who sang "Natural Woman" and the guy who did his own original song "Little homie". Great stories but more importantly great performers!!

I caught the last hour. 2 hours would've been too much. I still like watching Idol and so far this is the same show with auditions on a big stage. I'll keep an eye on it for now, probably tune in regularly after auditions are over.

I watched this show for 30 minutes and that's all I can handle and it wasn't because of the quality. I was getting a headache from all the quick edits on the show. It looked like an Oliver Stone movie. There was jerky cuts everywhere and I don't think there was a still shot on anyone for more than 2 seconds. they are just all over the place. If Simon is talking they show a shot of every other judge's face before Simon even finishes a sentence. The production was way too much of "in your face" editing. Show the performer do thier song, don't show each judges' reaction several times over before the song is finished. Not every viewer has ADD.

And Simon was way too nice. He said more glowing things in the half hour I watched than all the seasons combined on Idol. I know this is a higher class of contestents but everyone watched Idol to see Simon carve people and he would right to the final show. He already has that bored look that he had the last season on Idol. Maybe it's time for him to concentrate on something else rather than these redundent talent shows.

That's what DVRs are for. These sorts of shows always have long periods of nothing in them, just the nature of the beast.

As for comparing this to Idol, well I watched a couple of eps of Idol last year and it was garbage. Just a big bunch of ego propping and bland-hardly-say-anything commentary from the "judges" on there. This show blows that one away by a mile IMO, mostly because of the judges and the format. I really like allowing more people and more variety in them (groups, etc) than how they do things on Idol.

I also love the opening auditions being in front of a live audience as it's much more intriguing to see how people hand the pressure of a first audition live as well as seeing what the audience thinks of someone they've never seen before anywhere.

To each his own but I think this is going to be the new big thing and Idol is on borrowed time.

Maybe because I skipped Idol this last year (no point in watching without Simon IMO, the judges on there were all just way too nice) but it didn't seem to last too long at all.

I did think they did a few too many cuts. Not something I really noticed though until you pointed it out but in retrospect I think you're right. I also agree Simon was too nice but I think it's because the tone now is not to be a real bastard like before (look at Idol and how much it changed into a lovefest). I don't think we'e seen the last of mean Simon though.

I completely disagree though that Simon seemed bored. He seemed much more interested in what was going on than he did the last couple of years on American Idol. Perhaps since he wasn't very witty and sharply mean it just seemed that way to you.

That's what I thought until I saw the ratings. The X Factor had about 12.5 million viewers which is nowhere close to what American Idol got last season for the first episode. Modern Family had higher ratings than The X Factor.

The X Factor isn't in danger of being cancelled but I'm sure Fox/Simon expected bigger ratings.

I don't think it's fair to compare it to last year's American Idol ratings. That show has built a following for 8 or 9 years now.

I would be willing to bet that X-Factor had just as many viewers for it's first episode as American Idol had.

EDIT: American Idol had 9.85 million viewers for it's first episode.

Yeah, it's a solid start. All it will take is one big water cooler moment like the Susan Boyle moment from the British X Factor to inspire more people to watch and the numbers to go up.
