    Mattress Advice

    Hi,
I'm moving out of my parents house and have been furniture shopping with my gf. We went to bob's furniture and settled on a sofa I'm going to get there. Now it's bed shopping and i'm thinking of the bob-o-pedic. it'll be 1000 for the cirrus with a foundation with metal frame and tax/shipping. We went to Ikea yesterday and their queen memory foam set was 580 with foundation/frame. Isn't that nuts? I also checked out bedinabox.com and its about 900 with the same set up.
So now I'm not sure what to get and if anyone has suggestions please let me know.

This is my basic understanding of bedding:

The big players seem to be Sealy, Serta, Simmons and Tempurpedic. Kings Down is pretty good, but I'm not sure how big they are across the country. I'm pretty familiar with those four companies having worked in a furniture store and warehouse for 7 years and from what I can tell those are "safe bets." Obviously you pay for quality (which is usually in direct correlation to the useful life of a mattress), so the cheaper a mattress the less durable and poorer its construction.

I'm in the same boat as you and I picked out a Simmons for ~1000 retail. Also, I would recommend a low-profile boxspring. Most of the time the mattresses are think enough where a regular boxspring and the mattress will require a step-stool to get into bed.

yeah i was at ashleys today and the salesman was trying to get me to buy the simmons moon sky memory foam. it would've been 1300 after taxes/shipping/foundation/frame. i think its a bit steep

Bob's isn't the greatest. Just my experience. As for mattress. Don't go cheap. This is what you'll be sleeping on. I would recommend Stearns & Foster. We own 1 & the love the way it feels when we sleep on it.

        Good Luck

Regardless of what brand or style you settle on, definitely get a double sided mattress. That will literally double the life of your bed.

Whatever you can afford, I would put it toward a mattress. It is the one piece of furniture that you use the most (by far) and one that is important to a lot of health areas. Plus, if you "splurge" now, you won't have to get a new mattress for another 10-20 years.

Double-sided sets don't make a lot of difference, to be honest. Rotation of any mattress is key, but I wouldn't pick out a set simply because it was double sided. I think Serta is one of the few that still make all their sets double-sided.

after thinking about it, i'm thinking i should splurge and spend 1000 on a mattress set. this is getting so overwhelming. there are so many different types and they vary from store to store. ugh. i think my best bet is getting a innerspring mattress with memory foam on top. Ideally i wanted memory foam only, but thats getting a bit pricey for a quality one.

I actually really like the mattress I got from IKEA. I like it much better than the Sealy I had when I lived with my parents.

Really? I know several people who are very dissatisfied with theirs.

Maybe I just got lucky? Or maybe my old mattresses were so bad that I don't know what a good one feels like
