    Re: CompTIA certifications

I was told that for Security+, it only last 3 years now. But if you took it before this year it was a lifetime certification.

IMO, A+ and Security+ were pretty easy. Network+ was slightly harder. I have an outdated MCSE and current CCNA. CCNA makes all of those look easy (I've worked with a few guys who have passed their CCIE and said that makes all the others look like a joke). Over the last year or two, I've moved away from the technical side and into management so I'm looking more into PMP or getting a Masters in Business Management. Not real sure right now...

You're good. A+ is grandfathered for lifetime if you got it before January 2010.

Unfortunate for the people in this post who will have to pay money for this certificate over and over... I'd be studying making sure I'm on the ball regardless.. but dropping cash on an entry level cert 3 years or 6 years down the road doesn't sound bueno to me.

          Re: CompTIA certifications

My boss has been encouraging me to get my A+ but I've been dragging all year doing it on my own so he agreed to pay for a one-week bootcamp with NetCom Learning. Yikes, what a mistake. This course is awful and feels like it's bordering on a scam. The instructor doesn't go into any detail at all, basically just reading bullet points off a Powerpoint while the other students stare at him with blank expressions on their faces. No hands-on/lab stuff, little to no hardware stuff (really? it's the f'n A+ exam, an entire test is hardware related).

There are places around here that are like that. I think it's for the CCNA and those Cisco test. A one week course and they guarantee you pass. What they do pretty much is just teach you the test.
