Facebook friend suggestions just got sketchy on me...

Is there anyway to disable this? This is taking it too far...

I realize that Facebook essentially scans the contacts/address book of the email address you registered your Facebook account with and sees if those contacts have a FB account registered with that email address but somehow FB recently got a hold of my giant contact database for my work email - which I've never associated with FB.

My account is and always has been registered through my Gmail account (well, after the college-only stuff ended years back) which I only use for personal email. This week ALL of my friend suggestions have been clients and associates I only know through work - so the only way FB could be suggesting these friends is if jacked my work email's contacts (which are on an Exchange server). This basically means Facebook is somehow scanning my work computer for outside email addresses (even though nothing is stored locally with Exchange).

What gives with this? Anyone else seen this? I keep my work and personal life separate (I have enough pics and wall postings that I don't need my professional colleagues to see) and now I'm getting friend requests from several of these people. Not friggin' happy...

      Wow! Not cool.

Can you change your email address on FB to a dummy email account?

Like just create a dummy email address on yahoo, hotmail, etc. and use that one?

Looks like they just merged your listed Name and Employer and voila!

Glad I have a common name (ie., Tom Jones).

No, that's not my real name.

If you have mutual friends with work people, it'll make suggestions that way. I get the most random suggestions because I have 1 mutual friend with some person, so I would suggest to make sure it isn't doing that before changing anything with your work email

I don't know if you have your work email and Facebook both on your phone, but I think it pulls your info from there too..

There's one person who I sent emails to on an email account different than my Facebook. This person had no common friends with any of my Facebook friends. Yet somehow they ended up on my suggestions.

Only thing I could think of is their app is pulling info from my phone's email.

^Same thing happened to me. Thus, the downside of social networking.

TimmeH, thanks for the suggestion but I don't have a single work colleague that I'm friends with on FB so that idea doesn't apply to me unfortunately.

It's time again for us to hear from Anonymous, that rather well-known yet hacker group whose members remain largely, well, anonymous. The announcement made today…

Yeah, I'm in IT so follow all the Anon stuff regularly. Granted, them destroying FB doesn't solve my problem...well, in the manner I preferred.

I used to think Facebook could never die, but stuff like this and some of the other stuff that they do I could really see FB not being popular within 5 years.

I'm pretty sure this girl I like thinks I'm a total creeper now. I did one of those stupid *** applications that will tag friends in a picture. It was with rage faces so I had to. It took 15 random people and tagged them.

Also remember that people (I don't know why) allow apps to collect personal info.

If you come up in that personal info it's easier for Facebook to connect you too.

In other words: you may not have done anything to make this happen. I'd blame the people being suggested. AND it may only be one person because once that person is linked to another, Facebook will automatically look for common connections to sync.

I've had people recommended to me that went to high school with a cousin I requested. I obviously don't know the high school friend, but Facebook is simply trying to cut corners. For them, suggestions are about volume not accuracy.

The more they guess, the more they get right.

I think it was just hyped up and everyone wanted an account. Back in the day, Facebook was only for people with an .edu email address (technically college kids) When they finally opened it up to everyone, it was one of those new technologies that everyone needed to get one.

Kind of like how Instant Messaging was big in the early 2000's.

I deleted my account 6 months ago and have never looked back. Facebook is evil.
