    Re: Laptop Advice

I had a Dell Xps 17 built for me recently. I took advantage of a 25% sale so I got a $2000 laptop for $1500 Australian ( Which is essentially the same as US dollars these days.)

It's quite the beast of a machine. Boots up Windows 7 in seconds and runs most games at high settings at 900p or slightly lower. I'm thrilled with it so far. It's not a dedicated gaming machine but more than holds its own so far. Eg. Skyrim on Medium/High or Crysis 2 on very high at 1600x900. For work related stuff it's flawless.

The only downside is the size. It's far more of a desktop replacement than a notebook so if your after portability then its probably best to look elsewhere.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Did you know Asustek(asus) is one of two companies that makes Macbooks? Most laptops are made by either Asustek or Quanta Computer. Quanta manufactures Dell, HP, Toshiba, Gateway, Alienware, Sony, LG and about 15 more.

Whether you want a simple budget PC, a productivity workhorse, or a screamer of a gaming notebook, our experts have done the heavy lifting to help you find the right laptop for the job.

Here is PC Mags top 10 as of the 10th of November. I'd just search for these online and see which ones are in your price range and are getting good user reviews to go along with their Editor's Choices.

If I got a Mac, I would definitely load Windows on it...but that would kinda defeat the purpose I guess. We have a Mac desktop and laptop in the house and to this day I can't get down with the OS.

      But hardware-wise, it's good stuff.
I'm not sure about the whole internal battery thing. Batteries do not last forever. Whether it's a rechargeable AA, a laptop, or a power tool battery they will die after so many charges. That's why on warranties they only offer one battery replacement.

You would definitely be defeating the purpose. The only thing different about a Macbook and a Dell is the sexiness factor and the OS. They both use Intel processors. It's not like there is special Apple RAM, CPUs and Hard Drives. They all come from manufacturing plants in Taiwan.

I'd hold off as long as you can with Black Friday and the Christmas specials coming up.

So what you're saying is that "build quality" doesn't really "matter" or vary since all comps are made by one of two companies?

That Lenovo is pretty darn nice. Good price. Never used one but I hear they're solid. Gotta check it out more. I was looking at the pics of it though and one of them shows what comes with it. It didn't show a battery though. Does that mean it's built in like that other Acer one was?

Yes. Of course they won't all be the same. Just read reviews. You said you wanted to buy a warranty so you are covered there.

Not sure about the battery. Try looking on the manufacturers website.

            Re: Laptop Advice

Well if I go with that Lenovo that you posted, which I really like (especially what I read elsewhere about having no vents on the bottom and having a breathable keyboard to help cooling), then money might not allow me to get a warranty just yet. The thing I like about that laptop is that it seems like it was released within the last month, so it's not "outdated" already.

I can't find any damn info about how these internal batteries work and what you have to do to replace them if you even can. The battery really scares me, lol. I wonder why it's so hard to find concrete info about them. Might even have to call Lenovo and talk to them.

Also scares me that the graphics card is mid-range at best but I suppose that doesnt matter much since the most heavy use I'll be doing is on the web and not with computer games specifically.

These are really becoming some of the better laptops out there.

Not super powerful, but laptops really can't be without being expensive. With the smaller size you have to have components made especially for the smaller size, which makes laptops more of a luxury then a need. Plus, if one thing goes wrong then it can more easily effect the rest of the system. Good luck in finding your next toy, but always do the best research as possible.

My brother just got one of the Toshibas. I will have to look which one when I get home. The thing is pretty powerful though and it was like $800. The screen on it is a lot nicer then my HP.

I used to have a Toshiba, but I had to replace it under warranty four times. The screen went bad twice, once the fans quit working, and the final time was for a faulty disc drive. I obviously now avoid that brand like the plague.

I also used to have a Mac Book Pro, but it was the worst 1900$ I ever spent. I paid for the futuristic case and the Apple logo. I'm currently running a top of the line laptop from 2005 which I installed Linux on, and I get essentially the same experience for a super fraction of the cost.

What's the thought on the slot loading drives like the one on that Lenovo from a few posts up? Seems like if a disc gets stuck it'll be a bitch to get out. Also, dust?

We use Lenovos at work and they are tough. Very reliable considering the amount of travel they go through, the constant setting up and breaking down for events.

Next time I'm in the market for a PC laptop, I'm getting a Lenovo. Just a great overall experience with them.

I'm getting sold on this one, lol. I'm thinking even the built-in battery can't die THAT quickly. And I'm sure they can replace it. Would suck to have to ship it in though since there are no "Lenovo Stores"

Maybe one of them will come down in price in the next week or two. Cheap as is though.

I have a 17 inch screen. It's nice for the streaming stuff that I do but it makes the computer heavy and seems to use a lot of power. Either that or my computer is a piece of crap otherwise.

I'm probably going back to 15 inch with my next comp.
