Sound hookup question.

Ok, I am thinking about buying a cheap Vizio sound bar its the one thats $100. Anyway, it only has one optical input. I am using HDMI from my PS3 and Directv reciever to my TV. If I hook up the optical from the sound bar to the TV will I get digital sound for TV and my PS3? Thanks.

Most TV's won't pass audio from an external source to the the optical out like that. That output is usually used for it's onboard tuner only.

Thanks. I actually went and bought it anyway and it worked. I get TV and PS3 just using the optical cable from the sound bar to the tv.

I'm glad it worked. My old tv wouldn't pass any audio signal at all but your success got me to try it on my new tv. It passes an audio signal too but only stereo 2.0, it strips it of DTS and Dolby Digital. That wouldn't be an issue with a sound bar though.

Thanks. So am I getting DTS or Dolby Digital on both since im using an optical cable and my other sources going to the tv are through HDMI? Or am I not gonna get that at all?

I really suck with audio stuff lol.
