I have seen the LG models you're talking about and they do not come close to comparing to the Samsung.

If you don't notice it then you'll be happy but the black levels are absolutely atrocious on those LG models. Unless you see them side by side or someone points them out to you you may not notice however... but once you do... it's very difficult to not notice it.

Edit - well guess I should have read the entire thread. I would take it back if you can. I like the passive 3D but considering you'll be watching things more in 2D than anything, I wouldn't say it's worth the trade-off.

Yes, picked up a Toshiba for a steal that compares with all the models I was shopping around for.

I am taking the plunge on Friday. While everyone fights for the bargains, I'm going to see if I can get a decent deal on a higher end model.

I have narrowed it down to these.

Samsung UN55D6000S
Samsung UN46D6003
Sony NSX46GT1
Sony KDL46HX729

For short. Unless I see something else while I'm there.

I'll have to check again when I get home. Of those, the Sony KDL is what I'd go for. Seeing that in person it's a very nice set. I haven't seen the NSX nor the 6 series of the UN's but I've read to not go lower than the 7 series UN for the best pic quality.

Yes, that's the one I am leaning towards. The 6 series isn't the best, but a nice price.

I definitely am hoping to get the Bravia though.

Thanks for the insight, Pared. I've been around here long enough and seen your name enough that I really respect your opinion. If I'm understanding Amazon's return policy correctly, I have 30 days to take it back. If the black levels bug me enough on the LG, I may just take them up on the offer.

Anyway, I had read a few things about black levels not being great before I went for my second look on Monday. Looking at the two in the same light, I could see that the Samsung definitely had better but I sure wasn't turned off of the LG by the difference. Maybe it will be different when I see it in my space but I couldn't justify spending 75% more for the difference that I saw. Also, the new TV will be directly across from a picture window...the matte screen on an LG will perform much better than a glossy in that setting, won't it? That was my assumption and I've read a few things that support that idea.

Two strikes against the Samsung that swayed me too:
1) LG won the 1-page Google "problems" test...I typed "LG 47LW6500 problems" and "Samsung UN46D8000 problems" and saw two separate issues mentioned on the first page compared to one for the LG. Unscientific, yes...but see my next point...
2) In reading Amazon reviews for both models, a few Samsung ones mentioned issue where it would take forever to power on, clicking the entire time. This EXACT issue occurred with my first Samsung over 5 years ago. Knowing the incredibly difficult time I had with Samsung's customer service over that issue, I was very nervous when I heard that the issue is still occurring.

All of that said, the reviews (user and professional) that I read for both were solid enough that I felt like I could flip a coin and be fine with whatever it chose. Given that, I went for the more cost-effective option.

You're 100% right. I absolutely hate the glossy screens put on some of these TV's. They enhance the picture but in a scenario like yours they are dreadful! I have one and luckily for me I do not have anything behind my seating that will create light. But from the left of my set in daylight you get the reflection that I hate. I love a matte screen and my 4 year old LCD display was solid because of it.

Sounds like you made the smart choice knowing all that. My reply was typed out after reading only the first page and I'll always tell someone you have to go with works for you. That's why we have options.

If you're happy with the TV, that's all that matters! Plus, Amazon's policy is really solid - easily where I prefer doing all my shopping at this point.
