Hard to explain because I don't speak the technical jargon, but if you look it up using the right terms, you might get what I'm saying.

I would suggest that you either stick with a complementary HTiB or get a receiver separately and build piece-by-piece, but not a combination of the two.
That makes sense. I'll just stick with a HTiB then.

That system has a passive subwoofer. So for all intents and purposes--not upgradeable to anything worth having.

You want a HTIB that has a AVR that looks something like this:
      <img src=http://hifi-reviews.com/images/recievers/Sony_STR-DH510_back.jpg>
Notice the subwoofer input is separate from the other speakers

      Not this <img src=http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/htr340large.jpg>
The subwoofer's input looks just like any other speaker

One way to tell if a HTIB uses an active or passive sub.

Ordered the Onkyo 5.1 system today for $235. I felt that the passive sub wasn't gonna be that big of a deal for me since I can't really use much bass anyway. Hopefully this system can last me for a while.

Good deal. Will definitely be better than tv speakers.

Just ordered a pair of these bad boys (Heir Audio 4a's):

Now begins the frustrating wait while they are built. I went with a blue and red shells and a burl wooden faceplate (instead of the yellow and bamboo in the pic).

Anyone else here have any experience with Custom IEM's?

Nice to know. Did you figure out any way to mount the rear speakers using the keyhole? I haven't had much luck finding some online.

You can get some of those stands off of Monoprice for about half that. That's where I got mine.

                        Re: The Audiophile Thread

So my onkyo system came today and I need some help with the speaker placement. Because of my room's configuration, I can't have my speakers equidistant from the TV unless I mount them on the ceiling. So would it be better to mount them on the ceiling and angle them down, or have them at ear level but one farther than the other.

And for the surround speakers, I know they're supposed to be about 2 to 3 feet higher than ear level, but are they supposed to be angled straight across, or down towards the couch?

I'd say do the latter, and set up the dB for each speaker so they sound balanced for your seating position. Ear level is crucial.

Thanks. I just tried that and it seems it's not an option unless I want to mount it to a door. My only other option, other than mounting near the ceiling, is to put them both pretty close to the center speaker.
