Re: Leapster Leap Pad
We almost got one (they were everywhere before Black Friday), just the price was too much for what it is. Ended up getting my son an iPod Touch for $185. Sure it's $85 more, but the games are 1-2 bucks instead of 20-30. This thing eats batteries like a fat kid eats desert, and from what I've read, most of the games simply aren't very good. The iPod has tons of learning apps, plus I can put movies on there, etc.Comment

Re: Leapster Leap Pad
It's a cool device, just needs to fleshed out. The LeapPad 2 (which I'm sure will be coming next year) will probably correct a lot of the things that this year's model had going against it.
It's only hot because it's sold out due to people looking to make money off it.
It was listed on a few hot toy lists, so I've read of people buying 20-30 at a time right around Black Friday to make a profit during the holiday season.Comment

Re: Leapster Leap Pad
We were looking into this as well for our 4.5 year old.
Logitech also makes one that is $79 (I think). From what I read, it was comparable and the reviews were pretty much even...both had their pro's and con's.
Target had a display model of both and I left a bit unimpressed with each unit. The both seemed a bit slow and unresponsive and I wasn't sure that it would keep my daughters attention. Also, as others have said, the games they had in store were mostly +/- $20.Comment

Re: Leapster Leap Pad
Our friends have one, they get 4-5 hours per 4 AA batteries. Depends on the usage, 8 hours is definitely the high end estimate.

Re: Leapster Leap Pad
My son started using my ipod at 2 years old, now is 3 and is a pro at it. He can open apps, movies, etc. I have a bunch of reading apps on it, some number learning apps, and some others as well as actual games. Then put some of his TV shows (Super Why, Calliou) and a couple movies on it. Works great in the car on long trips. Great device at a fraction of the overall cost that the Leap Pad or Logitech tablet will run you.Comment
