"The Firm" TV Series set 10 years after the movie/film

Molly Parker (Deadwood) will play the wife of the lead (Tom Cruise's wife in the movie portrayed by Jeanne Tripplehorn) and a guy I never heard of will take Cruise's part. Good to see Juliette Lewis in the cast.

John Grisham will be executive producer but I don't believe he'll have any credited writing responsibilities.

This is a direct cut and paste from wiki:

    Spoiler

The two hour series premiere will be on NBC this Sunday, January 8th 9/8c .

Sounds interesting but isn't Josh Lucas playing Cruise's part? I'm suprised you never heard of him. He's hasn't done much lately but he was somewhat famous for a few years with some lead roles in feature films like the Poseiden remake, that college basketball film where he played the coach and that romcom with Reese Witherspoon. (I think it was called Sweet Home Alabama?)

Yeah, I recognize him but couldn't assign a name to his face .

I'm a fan of Grisham's work and I enjoyed the movie a lot. I don't really keep up with a whole lot of television, but I'll probably check this out to see where they're taking it.

I'll watch the pilot, and see if it interests me.

I have not read a book of his, maybe I should but I've never been let down by any movie that was based on his books. Definitely will watch the pilot.

I just can't get into Network dramas any more. They always seem so watered down.

I see your point. I'll give it a try though. About the only network drama I've seen and liked over the past several years is The Good Wife. It's centered around one law firm and the DA's office, but it's not a violent show.

The Firm looks to be a little violent, and I'm wondering if your network watering down theory might come into play here.

Watched it and turned it off after 20 minutes. Got bored. Hard to get thoroughly blown away or excited about any drama after watching 24.

I also thought it was boring after 20min, but I stuck with it and it got better. I'll give it another try...

I DVR'd it and watched it yesterday. I liked it. I will watch the next episode. I heard that the Pilot got a very low rating though. I think it could be a good show.

I saw it and liked it, and will record the second episode Thursday.

To sum it up the main character, his wife, his daughter, his brother, and his brother's girlfriend are all put in witness protection for ten years. When the mob boss dies they put themselves out of witness protection.

That makes for an interesting angle, but not everybody in the mob family passed away, so I don't understand why they all felt relatively safe because the head honcho died. The mob has found him, and the dead mob boss's son is notified. The hit appears to be on. The new young boss seems like a fish out of water, taking night classes and chatting with a fellow classmate he seems interested in. I don't know if his heart is in it.

The main character's brother is his private detective (ala Paul Drake) and the brother's girlfriend (Juliette Lewis) is McDeere's (main character) secretary. For financial reasons McDeere abandons his private practice to be absorbed into a large law firm which is starting a criminal division which he will head. There are 60 lawyers at the firm with 15 partners. He becomes the 16th. Concessions are made. He is allowed to maintain his office outside of the firm's confines. He gives them 50% of a potentially large liable suit. I'm not sure if he will also maintain an office at the firm.

To make a long story short this firm is not on the up and up and wants McDeere not for the liable suit (although they consider it a bonus), but for a murder case in which his client is the defendant. Of course the firm does not make this known to him.

This show caught me because I'm trying to figure out how the McDeere family avoids the mob and the "New Firm". It seems like they threw a lot of obstacles at them.

I read the book, thought it was good, but I think I'm gonna have a hard time wrapping my mind around this new concept. Didn't like the ending of the movie too much.

Wasn't wowed by the second episode. There's a lot of chaos going on and we have a "Damages" type style with "6 weeks ago" flashbacks that will go to "5weeks ago", "4 weeks ago", etc., etc., until everything meets at the season finale.

I got use to this format on "Damages", but don't prefer it. I have just attached a short leash to "The Firm".

Watched the 2nd episode and liked it too. This is a show I will continue to watch. It has some pretty interesting legal angles and then all the deciet in his new law firm will keep me coming back.
