Edit, I ran a bit with this and came out of the "rock" part of the list. SORRY!

It's too hard to make a list so I'll throw a few more names out there that I don't think have been mentioned.

      Chuck Schuldiner
      Marty Friedman
      Pat O'Brien
      Trey Azagthoth
      Chris Broderick
      Jeff Loomis
      Michael Romeo
      Glenn Tipton
      KK Downing
Jason Becker (who IMO had the talent and the want to surpass everyone)

Maybe none of them would be in a top 10 (except Becker) but are certainly notable for talent/influence.

Re: Top 10 Rock Guitarists of All Time

It's tough to rank these guitarists as most of the names mentioned in this thread all brought something unique to the art.

For myself, the one's that inspired me the most when I first started my music career were:

        1. SRV/Jimmy Page
        2. David Gilmour
        3. Eric Clapton
        4. BB King (I know he's not a Rock guitarist but he is one of the greatest in general!)
        5. Eddie Van Halen (I spent years trying to get the "brown" sound with my equipment, this guy was a genius, but the new VH album is weak!)

Notable mentions: Satriani and Vai, teacher and student, equally incredible guitar players!

There is a thread for that in this section, but I respectfully disagree. You won't find any hits on here, just good hard rocking music.

Some more to think about: Peter Green, Gary Moore, Derek Trucks, Mark Knopfler, Billy Gibbons, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick is the only guy I've ever seen that can somehow play rhythm, lead and counterpoint simultaneously...

                +1

As a guitarist, I think that this is their best album in 20+ years. No keyboards needed , just balls to the wall rockers that still have that sunny SoCal vibe to them. Classic VH.

Robert Johnson sold his soul to be the best and it took 4 pages to get mentioned.

Also horrifically not mentioned at all,Ritchie Blackmore.

                    No particular order:

                    Mark Knopfler
                    David Gilmour
                    Eric Johnson
                    Stevie Ray Vaughan
                    Jimi

That'd probably be my top five favorite guitarists.
                    Browns
                    Cavaliers
                    Indians

MY number 1 of all time is and always will be Dave Mustaine. I understand if you disagree but the guy's body of work, overcoming addictions and relearning to play after he suffered nerve damage in his arm are more than enough reasons to top my list.

SRV was a technical genius, but he just took Jimmys sound and added to it. Basically, no Hendrix, no SRV.

It could also be said that all Jimi did was make noise with a guitar.

But I like Jimi too much to stand behind that arguement.

Gotta say, I'm disappointed at how little love Randy Rhoads has gotten in here. Guy was insane, and could play any genre you could ask for. His song, "Dee", on the acoustic was breathtaking. His work with Ozzy was what made Ozzy. His work with Quiet Riot, even at the ages of ,17 18, 19, 20...again, unbelievable. His range was great, as well. My favorite two solos of his are "Flying High Again" & "Goodbye To Romance", which are two completely different songs, but show his versatility.

I guess the biggest problem with Rhoads is that he just wasn't around long enough to build the legacy and reputation that so many others have built. His work with Quiet Riot is almost unknown because they hit it so big after his departure, and his work with Ozzy was somewhat overshadowed because of Ozzy. What really sells me on Randy is how great he sounds live. Too many guitarists don't sound near as clean and smooth live as they do on the recordings; not Randy. He is one of the smoothest live players I've ever listened to.

For what it's worth, my Top 10 list looks as follows..

                            1. Eric Clapton
                            2. Randy Rhoads
                            3. Buckethead
                            4. David Gilmour
                            5. Eddie Van Halen
                            6. Jimi Hendrix
                            7. Jimmy Page
                            8. Duane Allman
                            9. "Dimebag" Darrell
                            10. (Tie) Slash/Neal Schon

Came REALLY close to putting Collins on my list; he's top 15, easily. Some of his work with Skynyrd was amazing. (I believe he wrote the song "That Smell", and his guitar work on there was great)

The guy who is with Skynyrd now (Rickey Medlocke; formerly of Blackfoot) is also in my top 20. His solo on "Highway Song" by Blackfoot is well worth a listen.

Just go to the 4:40 minute mark
