I recently had to reset my Linksys wireless router. I was able to have it talk to my Netgear extender at one time, but the wizard configuration that you are supposed to access via http://www.mywifiext.net/ or http://www.mywifiext.com/ seems inaccessible. I've tried on both Chrome and IE8. I've tried with and without the "http" prefix. Now my router is not necessarily supposed to be WPS compatible, but it definitely did talk to my router once before. I'm currently using WPA2 encryption. I just can't seem to access this wizard. Anyone with this device?

Every router has an IP address, just type in the IP address for Linksys. I don't ever use wizards......I just type in the IP address and do my changes that way. -

But that's the problem. I know my router has an IP address, but type it in to where? That's what the online wizard is supposed to be used for. I can't access the damn thing like I can my router control panel for my Linksys router. I put the MAC address in for the extender, but it's useless.
Netgear is the wifi extender. It's not supposed to be connected, but act as a wireless extender. It needs to talk to my router like any other wireless device would. I need to get the assistant up to input my router info since the auto-connection feature didn't work, but the website are useless..... keeps saying they can't be found.Comment

I think it's this whole WPS thing. This Linksys router isn't necessarily compatible and that's where the wizard would come in. But they have a configuration page that you just can't access for Netgear. Doesn't give me a lot of confidence in purchasing their hardware for upgrades.
Now that I think of it, I wonder if I was using WEP before which allowed communication. The weird thing is that previously, when I swapped out the Netgear extender from a PC to a WDLiveTV streaming box, it didn't skip a beat.Comment

No, it's just a passive extender. It doesn't act like a router and therefore has no IP address. It does have a MAC address, but my router doesn't seem to bother with it.
I think the bottom line is that Netgear dropped the ball on the website access for the control panel.Comment

Once again, you have to connect your PC to the extender, either with an ethernet cable or wireless if you are able to isolate the extender's signal. If your PC is connected to the router, and the router can't talk to the extender, your PC isn't going to be able to talk to the extender either.
You probably want to reset the extender's settings as well (usually a reset button on device).Comment

It's not possible to physically connect the extender. The extender uses WPS technology. Since it won't connect automatically, I need the extender's control panel. Netgear provides the URL for the wizard, but the site will not respond. So I'm forced to buy a WPS compliant router if I want to use the extender, it seems.

The product is officially called Universal WiFi Range Extender WN2000RPT. The ports are only out (to 4 devices). But, I gathered what I was doing wrong. After a factory reset and finding the manual instructions it was quite easy to re-establish connection:
Option 2: Connecting with web browser setup guide
1. Once the Extender is powered on and the Status LED is
green, use a wireless network manager on a PC to find and
connect to the NETGEAR_EXT (SSID) wireless network.
Tip: You can use any wireless network manager utility
on a PC or tablet to find and connect to the
Extender wireless network.
After the connection with the PC is established, the PC to
Extender LED turns green. Next, you need to connect the
Extender to your existing Wi-Fi network.
2. Open a web browser window on the same PC, and the browser
should take you directly to the onscreen setup guide.
Tip: You can always access the Extender settings
again by typing www.mywifiext.net in your
browser URL bar.
3. The web browser setup guide walks you through the following
steps:
• Selecting the Wi-Fi network you would like to extend.
• Entering the security passphrase for the existing network.
• Choosing the name for your new Extender network.
• Connecting your wireless devices to your new Extender
network.
4. If you want to make changes after using the web browser setup
guide or you wish to run the setup guide again, use your browser to
go to www.mywifiext.net. If prompted, log in as admin with
password as the password.
My IE browser did in fact go right to it. I feel a little silly after finding this, but I hope that this might help someone in the future.Comment

Which is what I've been saying all along, connect to the netgear. Also, there's no such thing as "out only" ethernet ports, you could have plugged an ethernet cable in and connected as well.Comment
