    Hauppage HD PVR Gaming Edition

    Does anyone have this?

And what is the difference between this one and the non-gaming edition? I'm VERY strongly considering buying this. I've been looking at getting a game capturing device for some time now.

I have the original one and it works great. The highest you can record is 1080i. You can't record in true HD because it uses Component instead of HDMI. The only differences I see in the "gaming" edition is it comes with a component plug in cable for the PS3 or 360. Besides recording via firewire, this is also the best option to record programs that are on your DVR.

The main difference I've noticed is the paint job and green light, aside from the component cable already mentioned.

Thanks. Next question though. You said it doesn't record in HD but that doesn't mean that the quality on my TV will be any different will it?

I play the PlayStation and Xbox at 1080p using HDMI cables. So if I use this would I need to run both systems at 720p and use component cables? Thanks again for your input. I've been looking at getting something like this for the better part of two years now.

I've been waiting for something that does 1080p with HDMI but I haven't seen anything yet.

I have the gaming Edition......other then coming with the universal component cables, the software is a tad bit different as well. Works very good, true you have to record in 720P and play in 720P, but honestly majority of PS3 and 360 games aren't 1080P native ANYWAY, so you not going to miss anything playing in 720P.

The only capture card that records in 1080P is the Black Magic. However that requires a VERY powerful PC to run, with high end Graphics Card, high end Hard Drives in Raid O, etc.

Also I recommend getting Sony Vegas editing software. The editing software that comes with the Hauppage and any PVR really is too damn basic.

            Thanks for the responses.

So if I'm wanting to record some video from MLB 12: The Show. I should play the game at 720p? I don't guess I'll really notice any different going from 1080p with HDMI to 720p and component cables, will I?

You have to set the PS3 to Component display to record using the PVR. So you can't play using HDMI and still be able to record through the Component cable.

It's not major, but you'll notice a difference in HDMI and Component. Point is though, you're not going to be recording all the time, so it's not like you'll be playing using component instead of HDMI all the time. It will still look great so don't worry about it. I recommend VideoRedo TV Suite H.264 for editing. Great program.
