I custom ordered my current pc in late 2019 through Cyberpowerpc.com. I've actually used them for my last several PC's as they are sometimes cheaper than DIY. My build is similar to what it sounds like you're going.

My main specs:
Ryzen 7 3800x
Nvidia RTX 2080 Super
32gb Corsair DDR 4 RAM
Samsung 860 SSD
Dual monitors, 1 Gsync 1440p 144hz and 1 older freesync running 60hz.

Overall it's been a solid build. I do occasional have hiccups with frame drops, and I can't figure out why. My previous build was an i7-8700, 1080 GTX, 16gb ram, same monitors, and it was fantastic until the day it died. So, I haven't figured out why better components have seen occasional loss of performance.

Yep that's a similar set up to what I want.

I'll probably be working on it more than gaming of course but when I do I need it to be good.

Was just going to go beast mode, but decided against it knowing new hardware is coming this year, plus I'm just not into the 4K game yet because I don't watch TV hardly at all.

My last PC was from iBuyPower and it's still alive and well so I don't have fear about prebuilts

I'm just shocked that the price difference has evened up with DIY vs prebuilt

Yep that's a similar set up to what I want.

They had to. Everyone stopped buying prebuilts because it was so much cheaper to build your own. Now they even make them so they're upgradable. They manage to hit the price due to volume buys I'm sure.

So, the 2080 super alone is going to make a $1800 build very very tight.

I put together the pieces from the build I did in December.

Depends on what you do. If you do Adobe Premiere or Davinci or 3D modeling software, go with the 3900X. If not, 3700x is fine

The price to performance increase isn't very good for Gaming/Desktop use. A pretty nice jump in workstation performance, but this goes back to the i7-9700 I mentioned a page or so back where many of these higher end CPU's are more than adequate for "workstation" performance. It just depends on what type of work you do and the types of programs you're trying to run on them.

However, there is something to be said about those extra little gains when you start getting into these higher total system build price points where maybe it is worth it.

What made you go with the 3800x?

Money lol. I was incredibly happy with my old system which was an i7-8700. I did a total new system though and at the time getting another high end i7 was going to be more than I wanted to spend. I think the 3700x was probably the best price to performance at the time, but the 3800x was only like a $40 premium, and the 3900 was a good bit more. I split the difference and went with the 3800x.

Actually I don't use that software. I do work on my computer daily but it's not for that lol.

What about gaming though? If there is no significant advantage I'll pass and upgrade to the new chips if i feel like it later on.

Like I said, i was going to just max it out but decided against that at the last minute when i did some research, and seeing #1, price point, #2 that intel and AMD's gap is that much closer than ever... since im not looking for 4K gaming and im not doing any 3D modeling or using any CADD programs, i can keep the extra dough.

Makes sense you kinda met in the middle, but either way the gains don't seem to be too significant with the 3900x as far as i can see.

That site has them neck and neck on everything except workstation tasks, but as i said, but im not doing the most intensive jobs, just multiple ones at once....and a 10-15% difference to me with my limited knowledge seems like you wouldn't even notice anyway lol.


BTW, good looking out on that list Madskillz... what is your system now anyway?

This may or not be useful to some of you making decisions. My system is used for gaming and day to day entertainment.

I run a PC monitoring tool on my 2nd monitor and when I never really see my cpu load go above about 40% or my GPU load go above 25%. I don't have much in the way of brand new PC games, but F1 2019 and Far Cry 5 at max settings don't really push this system. Hopefully that helps give a basis for what a 3800 provides and you can kind of guess what a 3700 or a 3900 will do from there.

I haven't upgraded my system in years...... still rocking my over clocked 5820K and 1080. Probably build a new beast this year or just throw a newer card in there. The Division 2, Breakpoint and Star Wars Fallen Jedi are the only games that make my GPU work hard. My PC is around 6 years old now. Ryzen finally gotten to the point that I am interested. Going to see how good Ampre and the Ryzen 4000 series be.

But if I see a deal on parts, I won't wait for the next generation.

It definitely does. Like i said, majority of the time will be work and other stuff even entertainment, but gaming will happen.

Right now it kinda kills gaming for me having a weak system. The CPU is okay 8350 but the graphics card is TRUUAASH! 580x

Its crazy too because this is probably the perfect time to upgrade, especially with the new hardware coming out... If i see something better when they release the new stuff i'll get it then but im definitely in need of upgrading..plus my oldest does graphic design and she can at least use illustrator on this one.
