I like the MSI board. Seems to have enough upgrading headroom in it. One thing you should consider is buying a new PSU. I'd be really cautious about adding a old PSU to a new board. Also you want to double check that the voltages and clock timings on your memory are compatible with the motherboard. I learned the hard way about "Frankenputers" that not all components match up. Especially when you are talking 3-4 years between components. It's almost better to buy a barebones, and start over. Do you have a independent copy of Windows?

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Here is what's happening.
Not sure how my power supply or memory would be a problem given I built my computer in the first place. Shouldn't be an issue but I know all the specs I'm looking for. I see no reason to go barebones when it was just parts put together to begin with and I know anything and everything about all that is in it.
He is buying a new case and power supply. I am giving up my motherboard, processor, memory, and cooler. We are recycling the HDD and DVD drive from his old desktop.
Which means I am now no longer restricted to AMD or even the AM3+. I haven't figured out just how much I want to spend but with Cyber Monday tomorrow, I might see if I can't get something good. I don't think I can justify buying an i7. My laptop i7 is really nice, but I'm pretty sure an i5 will be plenty for me. But I can still consider the FX processors. I have a good week or so but I want to get migrated before my dad comes up for Christmas and then we're going to put together his new one.Comment

It was just some random thoughts from my experiences with home builds. I would say that, if money is the main consideration, go AMD. Best bang for the buck. Have fun!

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Yea, right now the only Intel I can really justify buying is the i5-3570K. The Haswell at the same price doesn't seem worth it. And you have the potential (potentially painful) overclock on the IB. I can't see myself spending more than $200 on a processor and even that's a lot.
Amazon has the FX-8320 for $50 less than the 3570K. And hell, if I'm willing to spend $200 on it, the FX-9370 is there too, but now you start pushing power limits. 520W gives me some room, but that one would be getting there. 8350 is probably a decent compromise.
Yea, the 9370 is really pushing it on the power supply. The 8350 gives me a good 50 watts to spare even with aging and the high load. Worst case is if I get it together and my wattmeter says it is pushing 500, I'll consider replacing it then. It'll be safe enough to run at max load with some overclock. But if I've got a 4 GHz chip out of the box, do I really need to overclock... maybe.
So yea, decided on either the 8320 or 8350, and it seems like $50 for the extra 500 MHz is probably worth it, especially since there are some good budget motherboards. The MSI G46 from before is an option. There is an ASRock 970 that is around $100 which is what I paid for my last motherboard. I will pass on that ASUS one with the rebate. It was a lower end model any way and if I'm getting an 8 core, I'm not going to be THAT cheap. Seems like the 990FX isn't worth the money since I only use one video card. Don't seem to be any nice benefits aside from that.
And because the EVO 212 just might not fit in my case, I'm going with the Hyper 101i. Reviews of people with 6000 series, 8320's and 8350's for the most part said it does alright. 1.5 cm doesn't look like a lot until you need it, because that is just cutting it too close. Looking through the side vent it looks like I'd be fine, but don't want to get it and it not work.Last edited by Redacted01; 12-02-2013, 12:04 AM.Comment

Can anyone give me some opinions on this router in the above link ? Wanna upgrade from my current which ive had since 2009. Wanna know if its worth the upgrade or should I keep my money. The ASUS router will be part of Amazons lightning deals tomorrow so its gonna be a little cheaper than the advertised price. Heres the router im currently using.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Well I have it down to either the FX-8320 or FX-8350. Definitely going with the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0. There is a combo on for the 8350 and MB so it's just $30-$50 cheaper to go with the 8320. Also found out the EVO 212 does fit into my case and a little bit of room to spare. Not sure how long this deal is going to last so any advice before I just pull the trigger on the 8350? I'm hoping I come out the other side alright. All the power calculators seem to think it'll be fine (anywhere from 50-150W to spare).
And the motherboard sold out before I had the chance to come home and pull the trigger :/ Newegg was far and away cheaper than everyone else. If anyone has a microcenter close enough, they can pick it up for me haha.

I might go with this one. Seems like it would do the job as well as the ASUS. I just saw a lot fewer recommendations for it online. Seems to be tied to whether you get revision 3 or 4.Last edited by Redacted01; 12-02-2013, 07:34 PM.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
I'm too indecisive when it comes to this. I'm trying to avoid overspending. I don't think the 8350 is really necessary for me. And I really like that Asus board. Seems very reliable and nice to work with. Since I missed out on that combo, I think I'm going to go with that M5A99FX since I can still use the $20 rebate elsewhere and I'll just get the 8320. With the cooler I'll have and that board, there is no reason why I can't get it up to 4.0 GHz like the 8350. My PSU seems like it'll be more than fine. The 8320 should use a bit less power.
And for what I'm doing with it, it'll probably be plenty. I'm not playing games or trying to win any contests.
SuperBiiz had some nice discounts so I'll wind up with the motherboard I want and the 8320 for $267 before another $20 rebate. Should have just gotten that combo earlier today but wanted to make sure of some things with my current machine. That would have been $295 after rebates. I think I did alright though. Definitely do not miss this whole process of putting together a machine. Now I know why I said a few years ago it would be a looooong time before I did it again. I'm sticking to it this time.Last edited by Redacted01; 12-02-2013, 08:44 PM.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Newegg has 8350's for $170. Going fast! Snagged me one and cancelled my 8320 order on SuperBiiz. Good thing it was taking longer to process. Wound up getting the motherboard I wanted and processor for less than Newegg's combo deal yesterday. I think I done good for the next few years.Comment

SSD has been running fine for 24 hours now. Much faster than before, but still looking forward to see what it can do on SATA III. All that's missing is the motherboard which, just my luck, won't get here until Monday since it's shipping from southern Florida. Was hoping to have all weekend to mess with it, but obviously that'll have to wait until next week.
In the meantime, setting up the mess that is Team Foundation Server...Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
What kind of settings can a 7790 play on? Would it be similar to at least Xbox 360 or PS3 graphics? It's right at the price point I'm looking at, but I'm trying to figure out if I should fork over a few more dollars and get the 7850.
Also, do any of you have any experience with used video cards? Would you trust them or are they not worth the hassle?Fan of....
