Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

For a gaming PC, 8GB of RAM is your target, 16 if you want extra although games are only now requiring 6GB as a minimum. For the price though, that build isn't bad at all. You could probably sell the graphics card and upgrade to a 970.

Also, it really isn't that hard to build a PC on your own. Watch some YouTube videos and read the instructions and you'll be fine. When I built mine, the only thing that scared me was installing the CPU. After that, everything was pretty straightforward.

Sure you are! It's basically plugging things in. Might take you a couple of hours, but the learning experience and money you save will be worth it!

Words like thermal paste, wiring, static, and compatibility make the idea of building my own computer feel like this:

Thermal paste is just a white goo you put between 2 parts.

Plugging in wires is plugging in wires.

It's seriously not that hard. I remember changing out my processor and graphics card as a noob and did it successfully with no problem. I was nervous but it went over well.

Static just don't go rubbing all the computer parts on the carpet and touch some metal like on a chair or table before working on the computer.... it's not hard for real

Like 23 said, its basically idiot proof now Wild!

On topic, looks like I will be finally be building a new PC again. My little Q6600 and 4 gigs of ram are on their last leg. Just going to do a Proc, Mobo, and Ram swap out. Going to keep my 560TI for another year before I upgrade my video card again.

Thinking I'll go

Proc - FX-8350 or I5-4690K
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-990FXA or ASRock H97M
Ram - Ripjaw X series 8gig

Total should be around $300 with rebates and stuff.

Tip: For new guys getting into building PC's, you don't need to completely rebuild a new system every couple years. A good high strength powersupply (mine 750w), a case you like, decent hard drive, dvd roms, etc are all perfect to use in multiple builds. Saves on upgrades.

I've been reading this thread for a couple years now trying to pick up little bits of information. You've inspired me to practice by reviving an old PC and last night was the first time I opened the case.

I know this CPU is very old but how do I know what kind of card I can upgrade to? I read that I can upgrade to a 7850 but how do I know if it will fit?

Short laymans answer - You can't upgrade your processor because if you could even find one that will fit the old LGA1166 socket it will cost more than the new stuff. Adding just a video card won't help either because you are short on ram too.

You are kind of in my boat, time has gone by and left you without upgrade options for mobo, proc, and ram. So only option is a new mother board, proc to fit it, ram, and a video card. I don't know if the case would work for you or if the powersupply is good enough but those could be salvageable.

Reuse the DVD burner, write zeros to your hard drive and reuse it, and you can save you some money.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I give our son's A for effort for trying to put their new gaming PC's together.

The oldest son is having issues receiving a picture on his monitor.

The opinion is the mobo is defective.

It's an MSI Z97(think Asus bought them out)

Is there anyone to troubleshoot this to try to get it up and running before taking it to a small computer shop?

I'm sure if the mobo is defective, we can exchange it with Amazon, but just wondering if there is anything we can do to try to troubleshoot it at home.

Thanks.

Edit- Now it appears the graphic card is defective. It's Asus GT Force 970. I just contacted Amazon and they are sending a new one and replacing this one.

Fun times.

Edit Edit- Seem as the Roadman boys used long needle nosed plyers to help put the mobo's in. Ooops.

Starting from scratch getting new graphic cards.

Does anyone have a College/University hookup to get Windows Licenses? I know our school used to let us buy for $19 for a Windows 7 License. I hate to pay close to $100 for Windows. Will if I have to though

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Well its time I get a new Case. Not sure if I said it in the thread but the case I got before was broken, (A peg was missing to keep front on and such) but after going through all the trouble of getting it together I said F it. Well I also didnt mention that the case itself wasnt big enough/cool enough for my stuff and would overheat. I ended up taking the side panel off to allow more air flow but it just allowed more dust to get into the PC. I kept up the cleaning but eventually I fried one of my RAM sticks. I am now down to 4 gigs of ram instead of 8 and am finally going to get off my lazy *** and get a new case to tranfer everything into.

I just didnt want to go through the hell I went through the first time.

Any suggestions?

Check out the fractal design define R4 black pearl or the corsair 500R I'm trying to decide between the two.

I hate side windows but I like the corsair 500R the best.

I paid $99 for it in 2012. Not sure why it's $100 more. It has a 200mm fan on top and just sucks out hot air with minimal noise.

I'm not sure if I was tired or what when I posted that.

I see it as $99 now and a normal price of $129.

It has spots for fans in the front (2), window side (2), opposite side behind CPU (1), rear (1), and the 200mm exhaust fan on top.

This is the new version - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129203
Looks like it has two smaller fans on top instead of one large one. More compatible with liquid cooling radiators I am assuming.
$79 after MIR.
