Ok thanks.... I know you guys have posted some good sites, but honestly since I don't stay up on this stuff like you guys do, it's confusing as to what parts are compatible with one another. I put together my computer from a kit years ago and it's been a champ, but it's way past an update. I just don't want to end up buying a bunch of components only to find out I have to exchange 2 or 3 of them just get things to jive together. So I probably will go down the pre-built road.

Things you need to know about building a PC:
1. Intel or AMD CPU
2. Intel CPU go with Intel motherboards, AMD CPU go with AMD motherboards
3. Learn the CPU socket type for your CPU and buy the motherboard that have that socket type
4. Buy a graphics card, don't matter if it is Nvidia or AMD they work with any motherboard
5. Buy a good CPU cooler
6. Buy thermal paste for CPU
7. Buy RAM. 16GB is enough for 90% of people. If you use Adobe Premiere get 32GB or 48GB of RAM
8. Buy a hard drive. Regular or SSD, personal preference. SSD is better though, but cost more. You can have multiple hard drives.
9. Buy a power supply. 650 watts or 750 watts is good enough.
10. Buy a PC case obviously. The size of it is personal preference. Some like them small, some like them big.Comment

Also, there's a Microcenter in Villanova/ St. David's. Not sure how far away that is for you (checked your profile based off your username(go flyers)). Just a heads up that it's a viable option and usually competitive, price-wise with Newegg and Amazon.
I built my entire rig on their site and picked it up same day. Without a doubt saved $150 than if I'd ordered from somewhere else.

Also use PCpartpicker.com. That will tell you if all the parts are compatible. Plus you can post the parts you are thinking about here and we’ll help out

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
I'm not planning on using Adobe products other than Photoshop and maybe to learn illustrator. In another life I would have learned Premiere and such.
I've been going back and forth between Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7. I'm not planning on doing any top of the line gaming, but I would like this Jack Nicklaus Perfect Golf game to look and play smoother. I think the Ryzen 5's, the 16 GB of mem and a 4 GB video card should do the trick, no? I understand I would need to get the other compatible components to round it out. Thanks again.
Addendum: the other thing is that I don't have $1000 in pocket to throw at this, so I can't be buying parts from various places. I'd need to get everything from Newegg or such where I can do monthly payments. Otherwise, I'm looking at a pre-built.Last edited by daflyboys; 10-13-2018, 01:09 PM.Comment

I’m following along with you when the RTX enabled titles hit. I’m rocking a 1080ti but if you see some amazing stuff in the future, I’ll get one of those 2080ti’s. No pressure, your impressions only affect what my children get for Christmas.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
So I'm a bit confused here still on the components to consider if I'm going to build. I'm looking at this pre-built here as a guide to see if I could do almost as good price wise and it would be new:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...1R&ignorebbr=1
(btw, everything I'm reading about Newegg open boxes are pretty encouraging)
I'd like to modify (like larger SSD, maybe smaller SATA HDD), but things like what kind of SSD to get are beyond me (I just don't see these parts enough or how they fit together). I think a 500 GB SSD would be fine. Part of the problem I think is that Newegg doesn't really spell out what some of the parts are. Alternately, I don't really care if I have liquid cooling and seeing something like the higher rated fans would be good enough.
I don't know, I think by the time I'm done, it could end up being $1200, which I really do not want to spend.Comment

Pretty much any ssd is fine, I’ve never had one fail and really the speed difference is negligible so find the one that’s the best deal. I think 250 gb is a good size, you can have windows, all your programs and some games and be fine.

You can fill up 250g pretty quick. I would put a 500 at least if your going single drive.

Looks like the solder didn't make any difference on the 9900k, so not only does it run hot, but it will actually be harder to delid.

Almost no difference wow. Also almost twice the price as a Ryzen 2700x. I would go Red if you are building a new pc today for sureLast edited by RockinDaMike; 10-21-2018, 08:39 PM.Comment
