Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

So I did get a pre-built rig, but only with 8 GBs of RAM, planning on adding another 8. This is DDR4 memory. So will any DDR4 memory work as long as it is for desktops?

    I'm looking at this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/28322227743...torefresh=true

And I've included the specs from my mem stick. The 2666 frequency seems to be correct.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

The T button on my laptop has been giving issues for awhile now. Decided to pop it out and fix it......

Didn't work, I made it worse when trying to pop it back in, and part of the white connecting pieces on the key now seems to be broken.

Any suggestions on what to do/how to fix it? I can still use the keyboard, but for now I just have no key on the T spot, I'm just pressing down on the rubber underneath.

I've had my laptop for almost a decade now, and would suck if this is a contributing reason to get a new one, especially since I like my current one, for the most part it has been fine even after all these years, and more importantly, I like Windows 7 (and don't like 10 so much).

One idea I'm trying is popping out a key I don't need, like one of the number pad keys, and using the back. Although I can't seem to get it to all lock together.

I've read, visited, posted, etc. in this thread a few times over the years. I've been talking with my wife and when we move into our new house we are going to have some extra room so I can finally have a larger desk area for gaming. I can perform repairs on variable frequency drives, install and program PLCs, etc... just never built a computer.

The amount of knowledge and opinions flying around the web on various sites are conflicting and confusing sometimes. I apologize if I'm asking a dumb question..

I read that someone thought a GTX 1070 would struggle to run in 4K when paired with an AMD Ryzen 5 2600. Are those two items directly proportional to one another. For example, if I used a different CPU or even a different motherboard would that effect the graphics card's capability ?

I'm also trying to understand the difference in MSI, Evga, Gigabite, Asus, etc graphics cards. Are they just made with the same technology that is patented by NVIDIA and tweaked to different specs by each company?

I've never heard of a motherboard affecting a GPUs capability. A CPU can if it's not powerful enough. It will create a bottleneck where the CPU can't send the GPU the data fast enough. I can't imagnie that this would be an issue with the Ryzen 5 2600. It's plenty fast enough.

Now a GTX 1070 itself really can't do 4k properly. If you want pretty good 4k for most games at a solid FPS you need to go at least with a 1080TI. The newest cards are where 4k gaming is at now but they are crazy expensive. Personally I have a 1080TI and it plays most games perfectly in 4k and at very high settings.

As far as the different companies making cards you pretty much nailed it. They take the base card from Nvidia and customize it. They will OC it, add custom fans and cooling, and things like that.

            FWIW I wouldn't go for a 1080ti. I'd go with an rtx 2070.

I agree with WTF, at this point you better off with a RTX 2070 or RTX 2080. My GTX 1080 is finally starting to show it's age lately with AC Odyssey and BF5.

FYI I agree. The 2070 or 2080 is the way to go if you can afford it for sure.

You also want to consider if 4K gaming is where you want to go too. I’ve been 4K gaming a good 2 months now and prefer 1440p at 144hz just for overall smoothness and for competitive games. If you just play single player games then yeah 4k is nice but man you meet up players in shooters using 120hz + screens, goodnight.

But I would still go 20 series no matter the resolution you go.

First things first is set your budget you’ll have a better idea the gpu/cpu combo. 4K gaming ain’t cheap!

My 1080ti is pretty much killing everything I throw at it, and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. Problem is they're impossible to find at a good price point, comparatively to the new cards right now.

Bang for buck a 1070ti is going to perform like a champ, especially if you aim for 1440p.

If you can afford the 2080 you should definitely go that route. But for the money, the 1070ti will meet most of your needs.

Thanks for the input so far. I'm going to keep researching.

I don't know if I can spin a $500+ graphics card to my wife. She knows how much my PS4 Pro costs by itself lol.

I have a LG 27UD69P 27" IPS monitor all ready so that would save me that expense and I really only need to build the tower and get a mouse/keyboard.

If I could obtain slightly better performance or graphics than my Pro I would be happy with it I think because I can't really afford to buy some of the high end stuff considering we will be closing on a house next month.

Ill second the 1440p recommendation. It’s a sweet spot for performance/looks at the time.

Also you will have a hard time going back to console after this. The speed/smoothness/sharpness/etc of playing on a good PC and Monitor is just night and day.

2K without a monitor can get you set up really nice.

Anybody have any suggestions on a Dual Arm monitor stand? I'd really like to get my monitors off my desk.

                                27" and 32"

Ideally I'd like to be able to stack them vertically, but that seems unlikely unless I'm spending $200 +

I've found a couple different one's on Amazon, ranging from $75-$130. Was just curious if anyone here had a suggestion on one they use and like.
