    Refurbished laptop? -- would you?

Newegg seems to have some good prices on 17+ " screens with some good names:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...%20-%2017.3%22

Have around up to $500 to spend on a functional laptop...not really needing for gaming or graphics.

    Would you?

They also have this openbox item: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16834158211R
A little more than I want/need, but seemingly good price for open box.

They usually come with the same warranty as used ones. I liked this one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834215285 out of stock though

That's what I thought too! LOL

Although I think there are extremely vague differences, like weight, if I recall correctly.

Sorry, but I thought a notebook was a lighter, less beefy version of a laptop for only basic functions.

Ended up with a pretty good deal from Dell on an Inspiron 17R - N7110 Laptop

Found a discount code on the new/open box item putting the final cost at:

I thought notebooks didn't have a CD drive and the screens are generally a couple of inches smaller and they weigh less?

                        Netbooks are different.

Notebooks and laptops might as well be the same these days.

Think of a netbook as those tiny, sad looking things your niece uses.

I would also NOT buy a referb ANYTHING. Not even a refurbished fridge.

You want a serious 500 ish notebook? W7?

To be fair, netbooks did serve a purpose. Give you basic laptop functions without being nearly as bulky. Portability (longer battery life) and usually $200 less than a regular laptop were the selling points.

Of course, they have been replaced by tablets.

Yeah, that's true. A pretty fair, brief assessment. I had purchased a little Asus one to act as a "couch" device but it didn't really do it for me. I ended up selling it. But I did find use out of it to handle some mainly-minor Android dealings. Wasn't compiling or anything, but for various things it got the job done. I look now at my dedicated coffee table piece, my CR-48, and I can't help but think how unreliable this thing is compared to that. In terms of just basic use. But I couldn't deal with the tiny keyboard and screen. Ended up hooking my neighbors kid up with it.

I was rocking a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13 for a while, which I got for around $500 and was more than sufficient for my needs. I NEVER game, rarely watched videos, wasn't doing graphics work, but for what I needed that thing was more than sufficient. And Lenovo makes, hands down, the best keyboards. That might sound like some less than important "feature," but for me that is huge.

I, personally, do not buy refurbished electronics. I have in the past, have gone through hoops, and I have also heard enough horror stories to keep me clear. BUT, personal choice ... that obviously does open the options up, and when you're buying from a reputable place like Newegg (never had issues with them) I suppose that is a positive.
