This is where time travel movies become fun...

Isn't it possible that, unknown to the viewer, some looper attempts to kill Sid when he was younger, thus he realizes all the loopers must be killed?

Using this theory, it's quite possible that Joe's death doesn't change anything. Sid could still grow up, become who he is(was?) and the events we saw didn't change anything.

We're just assuming, as the viewer and the way the story is told, that these actions might effect a future outcome. We don't know that for sure outside of Joe now no longer existing and that woman he met not being killed, etc.

This is a very good point and what I was originally trying to say. What if "originally" the Rainmaker was a good guy cleaning up the drug and crime infested areas of his city and took on the crime syndicates single handed. Maybe the crime lords of the future messed with the wrong man's family. There was a line in the movie when they explained someone took over all by himself and they couldn't believe it because to do that he would need an army of people. May have been when Old Joe was talking to Young Joe.

Anyhow, in doing so he closes all loops and accidentally causes this particular loop to happen in which he suffers a different future but ends up doing the same thing but this time for more bitter reasons.

In any case he was successful in more ways then one cause Old Joe wipes out the whole Looper contracts and contractors.

Just finished watching this. It was alright. Not a fan of the ending. Just seemed done before. I was anticipating a significant twist and it was just meh.

And the time paradox stuff is always bound to happen when dealing with a time travel movie. This is where you just have to accept the movie's definition of loopholes and stuff to follow what the movie is trying to convey. If you try to apply concepts from outside the film's time travel rules, you end up arguing in circles, which is why I dont hold any plot holes (time travel wise) against the movie.

In terms of film execution I thought it was excellently done. Just not head over heels about the plot.

Just finished watching this last night. Great movie. And I love JGL and Bruce Willis.

Having said that, this excerpt from another site kinda sums up my thoughts:

In single timeline theory, Old Joe should’ve suffered a Back to the Future vanishing act the moment that Young Joe turns any one of the emotional corners he does in that second act of the film on the farm (bonding with Cid, falling for Sara, realizing he could one day become a baby-killer, etc.). Young Joe had already started down a path of emotional growth and change, meaning he could never become the Old Joe we meet – yet when Young Joe kills himself, poof! Old Joe is gone as if they are directly tied to one another. Either Old Joe should’ve reflected the emotional changes in Young Joe (which would’ve prevented him from baby killing ) – OR, Young Joe’s suicidal act shouldn’t have affected Old Joe, since Old Joe would’ve been from an alternate timeline.

I don't think that's right simply because he still would have existed. Plus, I feel like BTTF's timeline stuff is a lot more screwed up than Looper's.

Watched this last night. What a great movie. JGL was fantastic, and Willis gave one of his best performances is year.

Hell if a film.

I watched with the commentary on on Saturday. Not a lot of technical stuff, but definitely a fun listen. They just gush over the kid every time he has a scene. I hope he's in more stuff because he was really an awesome find.

It has nothing to do with time travel, but the entire movie breaks down at the end because of one simple fact:

You can't narrate a movie for the audience when you shoot yourself in the end...it's physically impossible to tell the story of how you died.

It's a cop-out by the writer and completely ruins the entire premise of would have otherwise been a decent movie.

An entire movie about time travel and telekinesis, and THAT'S what he found unrealistic? Lol.

Except he's narrating in the past tense. He's not narrating in the present tense through the whole movie...it would make sense from that perspective because it would be like you are reading his thoughts as he experiences the movie. The problem is he's reflecting after he offs himself, which makes zero sense.

I can accept things that don't make sense as long as they follow the rules the movie allows (such as paradoxes). I can accept telekinesis if it's part of the story. What I can't accept is bad writing in order to get a reaction.

A good comparison is The Sixth Sense. I hope I don't have to spoiler this stuff...

Since Bruce Willis was dead at the end of the Sixth Sense, the audience's first reaction is "now hold on a second! That's not possible because....because..." It's not until they "review" the parts that you think of that you realize your assumptions had been played and the answer was in front of you the whole time. That's good writing. What they pull in Looper is bad writing, plain and simple.

After watching this twice, Django is still my favorite movie of 2012. Looper was good, but I "enjoyed" Django more...if that makes any sense.
