Finally bought a video capture device, now I need a bit of help.

I have been thinking about buying the Hauppauge HD PVR for some time now and today was finally the day.

I've been messing around with it and have recorded some game play footage but am having a bit of trouble editing it. I have a couple questions if anyone knows and can help me out.

First of all. How do I capture a simple screenshot with this?

Secondly, how can I get video I capture onto either Windows Movie Maker or iMovie for a Mac. I'd like to be able to edit the clips I take and use them for a dynasty page of mine.

Any additional tips or hints would be greatly appreciated. Its a lot to take in but I'm sure once I get the hang of this thing I'll be happy I bought it.

For screencaps, your best bet is to capture a short segment of video that includes the screen you want to capture, then open it in VLC Player or similar media player that has screencap capability. Unfortunately there's no built-in way to do it through TME or similar.

For video editing, you almost certainly want to do it in Sony Vegas (either Movie Studio or Pro). For just about all other video editors, you would have to convert it (taking hours) and then edit it. You can get Sony Vegas Movie Studio for around $40 or so on Amazon. You just need HD Platinum 10 or HD Platinum 11.

Thanks. So I can import my files (M2ST and MP4) into Sony Vegas Movie Stuido and edit them?

Also, for anyone that might know. How do I get the black box to stop appearing around screen caps and videos on the Playstation 3?

I suggest always capturing your video in M2TS... it's most compatible with Vegas. But yes, you can bring those videos straight into Vegas and begin editing; no conversion required.

As for the black box, unfortunately there's nothing you can do about that. It happens to everyone. Best thing you can do is to crop it either in the image editor or you can do it in Vegas when video editing (pan/crop).

I see. Thanks for your responses. I'm going to go with Vegas. All I'm really looking to do is create videos for my dynasty page (see my signature/link).

Last question (probably not, ha) is what is the best way to get high quality videos that I record and edit onto the internet? Right now I'm using photobucket. I don't really know of any other way to get videos onto the net other that uploading them there. It seems to me, but maybe its just in my mind, that the quality of the video is deteriorated by the time it gets onto photobucket. I pay the $2.99 or whatever it costs per month at photobucket to get access to the premium options so I don't see that it could be an issue there. Again, maybe its just me but I just want to find out how to get the highest quality videos on my site as fast as possible.

I don't like waiting an hour for a one minute video to upload to photobucket. Typically the videos I make are at the very most, two minutes.

          Thanks again for your input/answers.

You can upload 1080p videos if you have them... though you'll only be capturing 720p for sports games. If you didn't notice the option on the videos I linked, if you click the gear wheel, it allows you to choose the resolution.

Ah, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I knew that.

As far as posting a video on a website like the one that's in my sig, is there a way to set 720p as the default. In other words, make it show up in 720p when you go to my page?

                    Uploading to Youtube

This may be a simple/stupid/easy question (at least I hope so), but I've got a video that I made after capturing and editing it and now I want to get it on Youtube.

I've rendered it to be an .mp4 video and I've created a Youtube account.

When I got to "upload video" it tells me either to drag the video onto the screen or click and browse. When I find my video (or drag it) and open it. Nothing happens. Its as if I didn't do anything at all.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Just go to Youtube directly, upload video, select file from your PC. Works flawlessly.

That's what I was doing and it wasn't working. I rendered it as an .mp4 on my computer and then went into Vegas and uploaded it from there. I got it to work but now my video (which should be about 8 minutes long) is only 5 second?

                        What causes that?

                          Re: Uploading to Youtube

Looks like you looped a section of the video and it left it as loop. So when you rendered it, Vegas thought you just meant render the section you had loop, instead of the entire video.

So after you get done editing, always remember to remove all markers and loops BEFORE you render.

Or uncheck "Render Loop Region Only" when actually rendering your video.

                              Thanks, that must be it.

                              I have another question though.

I am recording at 720p off of a Hauppauge HD PVR. What's the best way to be sure that I'm getting the highest quality video when it finally gets to Youtube? I edit the video in .M2TS files. When I render it for Youtube I create an .MP4. It seems that there is a slight dip in quality once it gets onto Youtube when compared to the video when I preview it in Sony Vegas or play it as a .WMV.

                              Thanks again.
