The thing about this that confuses me the most is why ESPN would hire her without ever having met her... don't you think that meeting the person who is going to be working for you might be semi-important?

I guess if you're ESPN.com you don't really care a ton about who is writing your articles on the internet as long as you do a background check (which I have no idea if they did or not).

As long as they write up good articles and generate traffic they probably don't care if you're fake or not.

It's stupid and I'm not really backing them but that would be my guess as to why they never needed to meet her.

She would use her twitter handle and those popular parody accounts she obtained to generate more visits to her own websites. Like Fresh said, the advertising on those sites is where the money comes from.

Sarah Phillips (may be real or not) gets promoted from poster to contributor on a gambling site. Articles do well. Phillips uses new position to scam gamblers into giving her money to start a website that is not actually going to be made.

Her articles get the attention of ESPN who hires her to write articles for them. She uses her ESPN fame to scam a kid that runs a popular Facebook page. She gets access to the page and boots the kid from admin. Makes money of advertising. Also does the same with popular Twitter accounts.

No one knows if their actually is a "Sarah Phillips". ESPN catches wind of the fact she's scamming people and fired her yesterday.

I believe all 3 are real, and have known each other for some time. I also believe Navin is behind the scams, living with Sarah at that apartment in Corvallis. Both went to Oregon State, although at different times, and lived/went to school very close to each other. Nick aka Nilesh is either Navin's brother or cousin whose running the tech side of things from Seattle. There could be more players though...

I spent some time last night looking up some of these people and found:

Pic from his frat at Oregon State. I found a some other pretty solid stuff that connects the 3, and submitted it to the author of the original article. I'd post it but I'm unsure if it's against TOS, and it's creeper/detective status haha.

Having the same last name does not mean they are related.

In India, there are is some hugely common last names, and completely unrelated.

In my HS grad class, we had about 12 Patel's and another 10 or so Singh's.

I had no idea who the person was until yesterday but now I want to see the David Fincher movie about this situation.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Yea, I understand that. However, a search provided me with a residence where both a Nilesh & Navin Prasad lived together in Eugene (3 minutes from Sarah's high school) with two other older individuals (probably parents). Nilesh also attended a near by high school. I also looked at a few of the graduating classes in the area for the years that would match up for Navin - no other Prasads in the area.

One thing, don't mess with the internet! Great research work.

I've read that people showed up to the house under Phillip's fathers name.
