The 30 for 30 on the Soviet hockey team (essentially the miracle on ice, from the Soviet point of view) is coming out soon.

        Super excited for this one.

This is one that's been shown before but I never saw it until recently: Hillsborough.

My God. Fans getting crushed to death, inept security, coverups, this episode had it all.

That was a tough one to watch. All those deaths, including kids. And at first it was attributed to "drunken hooligans".

          Such a meaningless tragedy.

I agree with you on this one...when I saw the preview and the name for the episode I figured it was going to just talk about the US side of the Miracle on Ice game, and I was like ehh. But now that it's from the Soviet POV I am really looking forward to it.

Also how was Playing for the Mob, the one about the BC basketball team? I am from the Boston area and was wondering if it was worth watching? I know the movie Goodfellas was based off these events and I haven't seen that yet but should I watch the 30 for 30 first and then watch Goodfellas or does it not matter?

            Thanks.

The two aren't that closely really related. The only thing they have in common is Henry Hill. Goodfellas mentions the BC fix in passing but the movie itself is based on the book written about Henry Hill covering all of his mob activities.

The 30 for 30 is really good as is Goodfellas, but there is no real order for which you should watch the two.

The lengths that the people went to to cover it up at the police department was insane. Like, that's a hell of a cover up system they had there.

Just saw the Hillsborough one. It ranks up there with one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, let alone one of the best 30 for 30s.

                  Best part was…

Funny this thread is bumped, I had a few 30 for 30's taped and decided to watch the one about the SF/Oak World Series... another well done episode.

It really doesn't matter as they are very different. But if you do care, I'd watch the movie first. It gives the 30 for 30 another (small) interesting perspective, while the 30 for 30 would do absolutely nothing for you while watching the movie.

Finally was able to watch Of Miracles and Men.

It was very, very good. Not the best, but it's certainly one of my favorites.

That part where the producer interviewed one of the investigators, who had his report and showed how stuff he wrote was blacked out. Damn...

I've playing catch-up and binging a little lately. Recently watched:

                          1. Free Spirits (about the ABA's St. Louis Spirits)

                          2. When the Garden was Eden (about the 70's Knicks)

                          3. Survive and Advance (about Jim Valvano NC State's improbable run)

All quite well done. I find myself a fan of both Cazzie Russell and Thurl Bailey now. Both seem like good guys.

Just watched Sole Man (story of Sonny Vaccaro and the shoe wars). Interesting watch. Perhaps ran just a tiny bit long, and it doesn't touch your heart or anything, but it's interesting nonetheless. Vaccaro's a guy I've seen pop up around certain areas of the game all my life so it was educational to finally put all the pieces together.

Also, non-30 for 30, but the Lenny Cooke documentary that came out last year was a very good watch. I recommend.

Some 30 for 30 specials coming in 2016.

The ’85 Bears,” directed by Emmy Award winner Jason Hehir (“The Fab Five”) and executive produced by Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley, will look at perhaps the most famous football team of all-time – the Super Bowl XX champion Chicago Bears – on the 30th anniversary of their epic triumph.

“Fantastic Lies” will return to the night of March 13, 2006, when Duke University lacrosse players threw a team party that ended up changing lives, ruining careers, tarnishing a university’s reputation and even jeopardizing the future of the sport at the school. The film, from acclaimed director Marina Zenovich (“Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”), will premiere on the 10th anniversary of the party that ignited what became a national firestorm and resulted in a highly-charged legal investigation.

Another 30 for 30 film premiering in April will look back on the electrifying Orlando Magic of the mid-90s, directed by Erin Leyden (“The 99ers”) and Gentry Kirby and executive produced by Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O’Neal.

Coming this summer, directors Judd Apatow (“Trainwreck,” “This Is 40”) and Michael Bonfiglio (“You Don’t Know Bo”) will explore the connection between the lives and careers of former New York Mets superstars Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden (executive produced by Radical Media’s Dave O’Connor and Justin Wilkes).

Also this year, ESPN Films will debut the group’s most ambitious project to date, “OJ: Made in America.” The five-part documentary is a miniseries event and the first episodic documentary by ESPN Films, starting a new chapter for the 30 for 30 brand. Directed by Peabody and Emmy winner Ezra Edelman, “OJ: Made in America” examines the history of race over the last several decades through the lens of OJ Simpson’s rise and fall.

It is perhaps the defining cultural tale of 20th-century America, one that centers around two of our country’s greatest fixations: race and celebrity. “OJ: Made in America” will explore these themes in tracing a personal journey, from how Orenthal James Simpson first became a football star, to why the country fell in love with him off the field, to his being accused of murdering his ex-wife and his subsequent acquittal and why he is now sitting in jail 20 years later for another crime. This 10-hour epic will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22 and will debut on television in five parts in June.
