Re: ESPN 30 for 30 Discussion Thread

So many of those sports guys completely trashed Vince McMahon in that piece it looked like.

I never knew so much about the XFL, all I knew was that it was a failed football league and Vince McMahon was one of the owners. But seeing so many things they showed in that video about things going on in the XFL...alot of it really was horrible.

Funny though seeing even back then some of the criticisms of the NFL being applied to NFL even today(most notably the "No Fun League").

Too bad they focused almost exclusively on the negatives and only briefly mentioned some of the positives like the parts of the XFL that became part of the NFL later on.

Alot of the XFL gimmicks were obviously wrestling types of stuff, more specifically attitude era tactics.

Great documentary all around. It also helped fuel my disdain for Bob Costas -such an arrogant prick.

And basically everything I saw from that entire thing, that was Vince McMahon being Vince McMahon. Might rub some of those "sports reporter elitists" the wrong way, but that's who he is and that's how he's basically made himself into a billionaire.

Who knows if it would've worked(though in hindsight, anything would've worked better than the XFL), but wonder if McMahon/Ebersol invested in the CFL instead and we saw CFL stuff on NBC, if that might've actually worked out. CFL is the 2nd biggest pro football league, only thing they're really lacking is money and mainstream appeal.

Or just do what many other people do and invest in a team, not start up an entire league. If the Islanders to Hartford thing actually has any possibility, why not invest in that?

I didn't watch it...what role did Costas have and what did he do that fueled your disdain for him? I wish the guy would stop dying his hair...we all know your mid-60's, so stop acting like you're not

Basically all he did was talk about how he was so glad that he stayed away from it. How they wanted him in the booth, he said no because he felt the whole thing was beneath him and how he was really glad he did. He came off as really pompous, TBH, and I actually like Costas.

Vasgersian was probably my favorite part of the whole documentary. Every thought he had about it was hilarious.

For you guys who enjoyed the XFL 30 for 30, check out Bruce Prichards podcast, Something To Wrestle, they did a full episode on the XFL. A lot of behind the scenes stuff. My favorite podcast going at the moment. "you know"

So, imagine how it is for those of us who already felt that Costas has a bit of a Napoleon Complex going on. lol

Thank-you! Basically sums it up perfectly.
Even at the very end, he gives us his profound thoughts that if McMahon had come out and addressed the crowd in a manor of which he suggested (instead of the WWE intro he growled out) the XFL would have been much better.

                    Bingo.

I remember watching the interview between McMahon and Costas when it first aired.
                    I was praying for a Kelly-Rome Part 2 scenario.

Costas admits that he didn't think he was ever in physical danger.
He believed this because he knows there's no honour in stomping an Oompa Loompa.

Lol. True. I mean, I've definitely noticed the fact that he's a bit arrogant before, but I've looked past it because he generally does a good job of reporting and telling the stories that he does, in my opinion. But man... this really brought to light just how full of himself this guy is.

I didn't look further into the documentary you were talking about, but I looked up the YouTube video of the Costas-McMahon interview. I had saw it when it first aired, and as big a story as it became, lost on me was the mention of the multi million settlement to the family of Owen Hart. What a tragedy.

My biggest beef with Costas is him wearing his Yankee pride on his sleeve too many times.

He even finds a way to come across as pompous during the "Spirt of St.Louis" 30-for-30 doc.

Okay, enough negativity for one day. I need to focus all my negative energy on Trivago guy.

I really think we need a thread on who people hate most on TV. I'm sure that would end well.

Watched the Survive and Advance 30 for 30 last night about Jim Valvano's miracle NC State team. I think this was my favorite of the entire 30 for 30 series so far. It's a must watch.

I absolutely loved how they weaved in stuff about the 3 point line being new, there not being a shot clock yet, how Jimmy V sort of invented the hack-a-strategy, and how ridiculously loaded college basketball (particularly the ACC) was in the 70s and 80s. That 1982-83 NC State team was crazy lucky with all the 1-point wins, OT wins, and opponent missed FTs that season. It's also incredbile to think that Jim Valvano might still be coaching NC State ala Coach K at Duke if not for cancer.
