    Computer Help

So this morning I was on my laptop and it froze, so I manuelly turned it off and tried to turn it back on. Now every time I turn it on the computer turns on and the fan starts making noise, but nothing shows up on the screen. Anyone know much about computers and could help me out?

Need more details.. what brand is it? are you running XP, Vista, or Windows 7? how old is it? nothing comes on the screen at all, it's just black?

You can try turning it off and removing the battery, then hold the power button down for about a minute, put the battery back in and turn it back on and see what happens

just to make sure, you took the power supply out too when you tried that right?

try turning it on while holding F8, it could give you a startup repair screen

Is there a hard drive activity light? Does it do anything?

When you say nothing on the screen, do you literally mean nothing? It could be the backlighting stopped working. It will appear like nothing is there until you look very closely.

I'm kind of dumb with computers, I'm not sure where the harddrive activity light is. But the HP screen shows up where I can bring up the diagnostics tests, which I tried running, but after 5 hours it never finished. It's lit up but is a blank screen.

And yep, I took off the battery and unplugged the cord.

let it run through the diagnostics, over night if it needs to. might be harddrive failure

Do you have a copy of your recovery discs?

                    Yes.

And if this is hard drive failure, will I lose all of my data?
