Will a new router make a difference in actual speed?
I recently upgraded my internet option since it is the only service we now purchase and only $5/mth is was a great deal. I'm now supposed to be rated at 50 DL and 6 UL. On speed tests, the 6 UL shows but it only goes to about the high 20's max. I stilll have my Linksys WRT54G (4) wireless router and wonder is it throttling a speed I could get. I have hooked up directly to my PC and saw the max speed instantly.

The problem isn't the necessarily router itself, it could be the firmware.
I'm running an even older WRT54G (version 3), with Tomato firmware. I've had no problems pushing a 50Mbit connection to the max.
I'm pretty sure that Tomato supports the v4's, you could give that a try. If it doesn't work, you can just replace it.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists Association -
Re: Will a new router make a difference in actual speed?
One of the best tips I've received! Finally did this last night after struggling with my service this past week. Got a reset via my carrier but something still wasnt right. Other recent thread about routers brought me to call this thread back up. Only took a few minutes to install this last night and realized full 50/6 speed through my router with my wireless devices seeing improved speed as well!!Comment

Re: Will a new router make a difference in actual speed?
On Saturday, we needed to reboot the router. My wife was peod because she to work at home.
My wireless desktop was working, but not her work laptop. I unplugged the modem three times and then, still, no connection for her. I fired up the family's laptop and couldn't get on, either.
The family's laptop has Windows 7 and it was running a diagnostic. Message said unplug modem, if that doesn't work, reset the router.
Reset the router, and bingo, the laptops came up. Few minutes later, internet provider went out for the whole area for an hour.
Wife high tailed it to work, 25 minutes away.Comment
