    Windows 8 Upgrade

Just received a status update from Microsoft. They're saying that if you're currently running Vista, XP, or 7 that you can upgrade to Windows 8 for $39.99. I'm not that well schooled on operating systems so is Windows 8 worth the upgrade? I know Microsoft is usually hit or miss with their OS.

    Re: Windows 8 Upgrade

The price is certainly right. However, Windows 8 is a huge change from windows 7 and previous windows OSs in general.

I might jump on the upgrade just because of the price, but am hesitant to actually install it because of what I've seen from Win8 thus far. Plus, as you mentioned the OS can be hit or miss. Vista for example was not good out of the box and required SP1 and multiple registry/settings tweaks (goodbye UAC!!) for it to be semi-decent.

I want to wait for more reviews and whatnot, but could end up doing this before the end of January (when the promo supposedly ends)...

All depends if Win8 is worth it or not...

For the license it probably would be worth it. For actually using it, not sure yet.

            Download it and try, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...elease-preview

Personally Windows8 won't touch any of my machines at any price.

For that price I will def get it but I won't use it right off the bat...I will treat it like my backlog of games on Steam. I know it's there and I can just load it up anytime if I wish to...

I'll probably download it and see what it has to offer. It looks kinda different than Windows 7

Im definitely staying on Windows 7 for the near future.

Much like what happened with Vista and XP, I don't trust Windows to make the proper upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

I'm running a Windows 8 virtually at work... pure trash IMO. I can guarantee we'll never push it out at work for our clients. At least I know I won't be for it.

I'll get to mess with Windows 8 at school I'm sure, so no purchase for me. Besides, Windows runs in cycles of good/terrible, and this happens to be a terrible stop.

Ran the Windows 8 consumer preview for a while and then the release preview and it really soured on me. I didn't mind it at first because it was new, but after installing the release preview, I couldn't browse the web on Chrome for over 5 minutes before it'd freeze and force me to shut down. It's definitely better served for touch devices. It doesn't really make sense on a desktop. I'm back dual booting 7 and kubuntu and I'll keep 7 for a while.

As for your freezing issues, I've ran the CP and been running the RP as my predominant OS for a while and haven't had a single freeze or crash on either version. That's definitely not regular behavior.

I always get Windows from MSDN, but the $40 price is pretty stellar.

This thread's been dead for a few months, but since Win 8 has been release, wanted to see if anyone has anymore to say about it. I am intrigued by the hybrid laptop/tablet idea.
