    PC Troubleshooting question

About a week and a half ago, I was playing my PC, when it shut itself off. It's done this once before, and after a few hours I could turn it back on and everything was fine. This time, however, it wouldn't turn itself back on. I opened it up, cleaned everything up, and nothing. Basically, the lights on top next to the power button will turn on for about a second, and then everything shuts off. A friend told me it was probably the power supply, so I ordered it, and received it today. I installed it, plugged everything in, went to power on, and it did exactly the same thing. So now I'm at a loss. The pc is barely a year old, so needless to say, this is extremely frustrating.

might be a bad memory stick or sticks

    OR

The mother board itself has short circuited.

I can smell a little but of burning as well. I'm afraid it's the motherboard, as I really don't have the money to replace that right now (even after I send the power supply I broke back).

I would check to see if your motherboard or PC as a whole is still under warranty since it is still relatively still new.

CPU also could be hitting high usage temperatures. Did you happen to touch the heatsink to see if it was extremely hot?

I'll put my money on a failed capacitor.
