Not sure we really need this thread.
If anyone out there ever thought Beyonce was more talented than Freddie Mercury we are in worse shape then i thought.
Freddie was one of the most talented musicians that ever lived period.

            What?

Anyways, that's far from the main thing that's wrong with today's music.

To me it's the fact that damn near everything is made to be some club/techno/house music song. I think there's a video on Youtube where someone gets a bunch of top 40 songs or whatever, plays them together, and they all pretty much sound exactly the same.

Now all that said, it's not like it's hard nowadays to find good music and filter out the bull**** or what you don't like. I know personally I couldn't tell you what the majority of the top songs being played on the radio are because I have my own radio - my iPod.

Re: Kinda says it all don't it?

I get the point of this and for the most part agree with the premise, but Freddy did also write:

              Bicycle bicycle bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle

I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride it where I like

which sounds more like something from a Dr. Seuss book than something from a musical genius.

When taken out of context and compared against an intelligent written pop song of today like:

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

by one of todays artist, could have the same argument made against it.

Don't get me wrong, I am in no-way discounting the genius that was Freddy Mercury, but in the right (or in this case "wrong") context, the exact argument could be made.

Obviously there is a lot of garbage written today, but the same goes for every decade. Those songs typically don't stand the test of time, which is why more often than not when you listen to oldies stations, you usually get mostly decent music. But again, several of the Beatles early songs (Love Me Do, I want to Hold Your Hand), which helped them take over the world and make teenage girls cry (the same way Elvis, New Kids on the Block, Justin Beiber, etc. did in their time), were very simple in topic and nature. They don't take away from the genius that was John Lennon and/or McCartney, but show that even the best of song writers can write some pretty cheesy stuff.

The bottom line is that things that get played on the pop radio stations are primarily going to be simple songs with catchy beats because they appeal to the masses. The same can also be said about movies...Rarely are the movies that make the most money, the ones that win Oscars for best picture.

Hopefully though, in 20 or 30 years when people look back they won't think that Nickelback and Pitbull were the epitome of Rock and Rap music in the early 2010's.

What bothers me the most about todays pop artists is that they are for the most part one dimensional. They rarely write their own songs and most can't even perform them live without the aid of backup tracks.

No it doesn't say anything other than you've forgotten that many hits by famous singers in the past (Frank Sinatra for example) weren't written by them and were created by teams of writers/musicians. There has always been and will always be crappy songs in every generation, it's not exclusive to any particular time period. Every generation has older people who complain that the current popular form of music is crappy and indicative of a downswing in standards.

jmood does have a point, but I think the problem is that the outrageous compensation and fanfare given to a lot of the music today that often times is largely mediocre. The sets and personnel employed just to pull off a pop song is mind-blowing.

I'm fairly sure there's more to that song then what was posted.

This isn't even close to what's wrong with music today, I can exactly put what's wrong if anything in words but it's not this Beyonce song really. The commercialization of the music industry is what's wrong if anything, large followings for terrible 1 hit pop artists, etc

There is nothing wrong with today's music. Just like there was nothing with the music being made in 1975 when Bohemian Rhapsody was released.

This whole argument is based on a hook from a pop/club song. Don't forget you have access to the internet. If you don't like what you hear on the radio, do a little research. There is plenty of quality music being made today.
