After watching Django months ago no movie dealing w/ segregated times seems racist enough lol. I thought it was ok. I'd rank it behind movies like Remember the Titans, Glory Road even Pride.

Oh my god, this movie was amazing. Easily one of my favorite sports titles of all-time, right up there with Friday Night Lights and Remember the Titans. I'll spoiler my favorite part.

Oh, and there were a lot of actors I wasn't expecting to see. Plus, Nicole Beharie looked mighty fine.

I can't recall the last Disney movie I saw that was so full of racism and segregation. It didn't seem cheesy at all to me. It was supposed to be a feel-good movie. It was plenty dark for what it was.

No you're not alone. I find it overly cheesy myself. The filmmakers sugarcoated the racism aspect and focused too much on Branch Rickey in my opinion. But I'm also the one who had an issue with lyrics about selling dope being the trailer. Our opinion on the movie won't be popular here.

Decent movie for what it was. I expected better though.

What was it about this movie that made it cheesy and disney like and not more real and dark?

It just didn't capture the racism of that time period like other movies. I never felt Jackie was ever in any real danger. I would have also liked to see a bit more of his life before his minor league career and Mr. Branch.

Remember The Titans is a Disney movie that did a good job with segregation, integration and racism. In 42 I just didnt really feel the disdain from people who believed Jackie didnt belong. I still believe 42 was pretty decent though.

I thought it was really good but I didn't care for Harrison Ford's portrayal of Rickey. I also felt that they "sugarcoated" the abuse Jackie got. It was much worse than that. As said above, it never felt like he was "in danger" or anything. I think the impact would have been increased had they shown more of what he had to go through from fans off the field. Obviously can't show everything.

Thought the actor playing Jackie did a phenomenal job, and the actress playing Rachel was smokin' hot.

                        No doubt about it.

Just came back from this. I wasn't really expecting or feeling the need for it to be dark. From a story-telling standpoint, though, it was protracted and not edited well. It seemed to have a bunch of scenes thrown back to back. It could have been about 15-20 mins. shorter. And I agree about the tunnel scene during the Philly game, but overall I felt like I walked away from an extended made-for-TV movie.

I saw it earlier today, and I liked it. They didn't show all of the abuse he got, but I still thought the movie was pretty good overall.

Finally saw it today. I liked it, but agree that the racism was toned down. They focused too much on making Ben Chapman the "villain", IMHO.
