    Modem/Router/XBox 360 NAT help...

So in trying to run a race with some fellow OSers today I discovered that my NAT settings were not properly configured to allow me to play with certain guys. I did a number of searches and toying with settings and even called Windstream...ultimately disabling my whole network and having to reset the whole deal. I can't seem to make heads or tails of how to resolve the issue so that I'm not limited in who I can play with/against online. Can one of you computer geniuses lend a hand?

    Here is my setup:
The modem is a Sagemcom 4300 which goes to my Cisco Linksys E1000 wireless router, but the XBox stays hard wired to it through one of the ports. My internet provider is Windstream...if that matters.

I greatly appreciate anyone who can help out!

Hope this link helps. Steps 2 & 4 are what you wanna do.

In step 4 use Method 2

BTW all of this is done within your Linksys Router

I'm sure youve done these suggestions

          - try searching for and enabling uPnP in your router control panel if you havent
          - see if you can find a place in your router control panel for the router firewall. There are bound to be options in there. Check packet inspection in particular and research which settings are the least restrictive.

Some routers dont make it easy, and some impossible. My router is a more expensive, technically-minded router and my NAT is open, but occasionally it switches to Moderate, and even seen Strict, though I've not changed any settings. Sometimes all it atkes for me to fix it is go in, change a setting, save, change it back and save.

This is one fo the most frustrating parts of owning a router - theyre always poorly built also. Capacitors in them blow, and before they "go bad and fail" they start to act funny, or not as expected. They come out of the factory with a 24-month life expectancy in most cases - that's not good.

I would check the Xbox 360 router compatibility list, and next time you buy a router see if you can get one of those. Theyre not always easy to find, nor are they always the best routers for all-round use.

You can also look into 3rd party firmware THOUGH I DONT RECOMMEND THIS IF YOU ARENT CONFIDENT. One of my routers has this firmware and it worked wonders for it. Check the compatibility list to see if your router is supported.

To resolve the NAT problem because I run a double router before it hits my 360, I had to set a static IP address on my XBox 360 and then forward those ports to that IP address in my router. That fixed all NAT issues for me. Willing to bet it would work for you as well.

Do you know how to setup a static IP address on your 360 that will work with your router? If so, give it a try and then forward the following ports to that IP address:
            • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
            • Port 88 (UDP)

For example, here's an image of my setup.

You should be able to enable UPNP and it will automatically forward whatever ports you need.

I have a Linksys router and have to do something no one else had mentioned. I am not sure why this would open it up because it should really do the opposite.

Under the applications and gaming tab go to DMZ and add the IP address in there as well.

Most routers I've owned don't use uPnP properly, not always opening up my ports the way it should.

DMZ = DeMilitarized Zone. Basically, any devices you put in there are almost completely bypassing your router\firewall and are not protected at all. Not the way to go at all, though I do know one guy who won't buy a new router and doesnt mind switching to DMZ before he plays, but make sure you switch back after.
