PS Vita vs Wii U

At least here in Australia they are comparable price wise, are they comparable in other ways? Apart from my Ipad, I have never owned a hand held games unit but am interested in a dedicated gaming hand held. I realise there are differences in portability between the Vita and the Wii U controller but are they similar pieces of tech?

They aren't really comparable outside of a couple of contexts. WiiU is a stationary home console, the Vita is a portable. Period. WiiU has a benefit of allowing you to play some games on the tablet controller, but from what little I've read you have to often be in line of sight, or within 20 feet or so of the console.

So depending on why you are buying the consoles, will determine which one is for you.

The real debate is if you should get a WiiU if you have a 360/PS3, or a Vita over a 3DS or other handheld device like an iPad/smartphone you may already have.

Both have dubious 3rd party support as well, either now (Vita) or in the future (WiiU once more powerful consoles are released). Depending on what you want them for, that may not matter at all.

WiiU is a risk, but if you want a Nintendo console for at least the 1st party games, it's there. Vita, if you could justify it you'd probably already have one. They'll be dropping the price after the holiday.

IMO there are really apples to oranges. The Wii U is "portable" for 24-30 feet lol whereas the VITA is a portable system.

The WiiU is really a console will added function due to the gamepad. (Play full game on pad and extra functions during gameplay etc..)

If you are wanting a full handheld then go 3DS or Vita.
