My brother had the same reaction to Breaking Bad. He stopped at the first season episode where Jesse missuses some acid and burns a hole through his second floor bathtub among other things. After my further praises of the show he eventually (4 months later) picked it up again finishing the first three seasons a couple of days before the premiere of season 4.

He now heralds the show as "best ever".

Yeah well, if a show (especially one that only has 12, 13 episodes a season) can't hook me within the first three or four episodes, I probably won't give it the benefit of going back it it. I'm not about to invest a season just for the show to get going.

The Shield is better than all those dramas.

More like Kanye at the Grammys... a lot of bark with no bite.

I'm not a Breaking Bad fan either but I'll at least give that the benefit of the doubt with all the love it gets from everyone else. The Shield was decent but you're shooting blanks, lol.

Your impatience enables you to miss out on a lot of really great television.

The best drama on TV is Game of Thrones, and yes I state that as fact even though it's opinion. This one is in the conversation, though.

It's not about patience, because I get it. I just don't think it's right to burn so much time just to hook a viewer.

4 hours isn't that much over the course of a series.

It'd be like reading the first 250 or so pages of Game of Thrones and not finishing it.

It's more about principle than time. A show needs to be captivating. If you're waiting on a show to become captivating, then why is it being watched? Because you're told it's captivating by other people? Meh. It's not right.

Start the show off right. You HAVE to make people say "****, I gotta watch this."

It doesn't even have to be a "jump" moment or anything. Just make the ****ing first episode or two outstanding at least. Maybe it's just marketing/business side coming out. Especially when there's 13 episodes in a season, you can't afford to waste any.

People talk about how some shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad use the early episodes for exposition purposes, and I'm a firm believer that you can provide story exposition WHILE being awesome at the same time. 24 did it. Homeland did it. The Americans is certainly doing it.

The argument would be that it's worth reading the first 250 pages.

I kind of see what he's saying. I'll give anything a shot, and sometimes a second shot. But shows get pilots for a reason. If they don't grab you right away, that first impression can cost them a lot of viewers. I'm not saying I think it applies with Mad Men or Breaking Bad but I can see it... and could see skipping a show out of principle if they didn't grab me right away on purpose (out of principle).

True, but I'm not of the opinion Breaking Bad required patience to get into. My brother was initially brought down by the somewhat depressing nature of the show.

I was hooked on Breaking Bad during the whole saga of Emilio being chained up in the basement, and that was like...what, two, three episodes in?

As for the depressing nature, that was what had me off balance with The Walking Dead. Just a very dark show, especially early on.
