I might not have been paying attention enough but I had no idea what his character's name was until he had to leave.

Saw it, and loved it. Top ten film for me. Right now I'd say Django, Lincoln, Life of Pi, Perks of Being a Wallflower and probably Moonrise Kingdom were the only films I enjoyed more.
