    PlayOn on sale again

It's been over a year where PlayOn has had a good sale. This is a pretty good one, especially if you are looking to try a streaming media device. The PlayLater option doesn't seem all that useful. The one-time basic lifetime membership of $40 is well worth it, especially since this application can use your gaming system as a streaming device as well. Unfortunately they don't have the free 30 day trial any longer, but it seems they do have 30 day money back guarantee. If you buy it with the RokuLT, it's like getting the Roku for $40 (inc. the shipping fee). Best price I've seen for the device alone is $54 shipped via Tiger Direct.

You can get the LT on Amazon for $48, so that beats TigerDirect.

One lifetime fee is reasonable, but I don't plan on ever leaving cable or satellite so I'm not sure where the benefits are for me. If they had TNT, USA, and ESPN 2, then maybe I could be convinced. Not sure how their national networks work either. Would I get my local channels or a NY/LA broadcast of NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox? If you lose out on football, then I couldn't do it anyway. Can't use an antenna here to get OTA channels due to a local iron ore.

It's an open source program and even though they provide their sanctioned / supported channels, they link to other sites where people create their own scripts/plug-ins (for which they have no support).

          Under the "there's more..." heading:

Tonight, Everything's On. Thousands of movies, shows and channels. Channels you can record and stream from include A&E, ABC, Amazon Instant Video, HBO, Netflix, Comedy Central. See the full list.

Hmmm, it could be worth getting. I'm sure I'd get something out of it over a lifetime. And beat paying $90 if I change my mind later. Very very tempting. I spend enough money as it is, but what's another $40.

For the money and the potential, this is the best thing I've bought in the past 10 years easily.

Does this offer something to someone who has satellite, a Roku 3, Plex and a tablet with screen mirroring for watching live games off websites? I've always been interested yet unclear as to what this actually does.

My question as well. What am I actually paying for?

Although PlayLater supposedly works like a DVR. But I don't have it.

You're paying for these PlayOn official channels: http://www.playon.tv/channels These are typically on-demand programs, usually found on a particular channel company's website as well. Keep in mind that PlayOn was developed before smart tv's, etc. were on the scene, so you see things like Netflix, which people can usually access now from their gaming or streaming device. Plus the browser extension allows you to watch anything on the 'net via PlayOn to your associated TV.

Plus other scripts/plug-ins made by other parties. Most of the third party plug-ins are free, though there are a few who charge a few bucks per script if you really want them.

Most channels you still have to have a cable/satellite login for though....my parents have this..

That's actually true (though it wasn't always that way). But it's not the only reason to get PlayOn.
