    Re: Only God Forgives

Forgot to mention it when I was writing about it in the recent movies topic but the violence in this is overrated. By that I mean it's a fuss over nothing. There are plenty more violent movies and maybe even TV shows than this. I was expecting Ichi the Killer level of violence.

Yeah the violence was on par with Drive. It felt like Bronson and Drive poured out of a blender. Julian was obviously a messed up guy so I can see a lot of people disliking his scenes. I loved how the cop was built up. Crazy mofo galore in this movie.

Kristin Scott Thomas was so good people are legit afraid of her now.
Also she didn't know who Ryan Gosling was.

Ever since moviegoers began viewing her domineering-mother performance in “Only God Forgives,” Kristin Scott Thomas has experienced an unusual reaction. People — males, usually — approach her to speak about the movie, only to find themselves cowering.

“Men come up and tremble. They have fear in their eyes after seeing the film,” she said in an interview at a midtown hotel recently. “It’s like, ‘the little boy is frightened.’”

So different is the role from Scott Thomas’ typical parts that when her agents first sent her the script, she thought they had mixed up her email address with that of another client. She eventually decided to take on the role, in part after being moved by Refn’s dark but haunting vision in the 2008 crime biopic “Bronson.”

Scott Thomas is a mother herself, and at one point during the interview she took a call from her son reminding her to get Gosling’s autograph as they were promoting the film — “he’s 13 and doesn’t even want it for himself; he wants it to impress a girl,” she said with a twinkle in her eye.

(Incidentally, Scott Thomas said she didn't know Gosling when she first signed on; she's too caught up in making movies, she said, to keep up with younger stars. She learned quickly, though, when she would tell people the name of her new co-star — "I mean, these were women of my generation, and the blood would literally drain from their face." The fact that there was sexual tension intrigued them more — never mind the small fact that she was playing his mother.)

Cripes...this is the same actress (yes.... I still use the terms actress, waitress and hostess) who was recently complaining in an interview how she doesn't like it when younger actresses get noticed above her since she is aging now.

          Hollywood.

Is that not a legitimate complaint or something?

It's whining to get more tabloid/virtual press recognition. How about being grateful over the thousands of probable gorgeous and talented young actresses who can't find work?

Its not like KST is a house-hold name and I really don't think it garnered her that much additional coverage or recognition. I think its a fair and legitimate complaint.

Maybe.....but I think it's sort of like the mentality "inside the Belt". When you're in it, you seem to develop or possibly overdevelop a certain perspective of the world that is not necessarily in keeping with the culture at large. I guess, simply, you're in a particular sub-culture and when that attitude comes out to the "common folk", the common folk give you that "dog's head cocked to the side wtf" look.

Really liked this movie. It kinda has that Valhalla Rising atmosphere and the Drive approach to the violence IMO, which a lot of it's own flair. I guess I am just trying to say it's very Refn.

I used to make fun of Gosling as the "loser from Notebook," but the dude is a pretty stellar actor IMO. I would watch him play the shark from Jaws if he was cast as it.
