As hard as is may be to imagine, there was a time where "edgy" and "counterculture" were used to describe Robin Williams...

And yeah, Jonathan Winters brought that brand of "surrealist comedy" to the mainstream WELL beforehand...

I heard of him from a reference in The Simpsons. "There was enough tranquilizer in there to take down Jonathan Winters!". Other than that nothing comes to mind but that's what the internet is for!

Looking at his IMDB page I do remember him from that Twilight Zone episode and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Based on those he was pretty good. He was also Papa Smurf. Did a lot of voice over work actually.

I'm actually a distant relative of his (about "third" removed). His middle name (Harshman) is my last name. We have family history / genealogy books and my dad told me stories about various family members as a kid. I believe my great-grandmother was close kin to him. But I always enjoyed his humor...

My father’s laughter introduced me to the comedy of Jonathan Winters. My dad was a sweet man, but not an easy laugh. We were watching Jack Paar on “The Tonight Show” on our black-and-white television, and on came Jonathan in a pith helmet.

“Who are you?” Paar asked.

“I’m a great white hunter,” Jonathan said in an effete voice. “I hunt mainly squirrels.”

“How do you do that?”

“I aim for their little nuts.”

My dad and I lost it. Seeing my father laugh like that made me think, “Who is this guy and what’s he on?”
