Slayer guitarist, Jeff Hanneman, dead at 49...

    From Slayer's official Facebook page:

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Slayer is one of my favorite bands of all-time, so this is devastating news to me.

    RIP Jeff!

I have never liked Slayer, but as a metal head I can appreciate what they have done for the industry. I still hate to hear news like this.

I imagine for a fan of Slayer, its similar to how I felt when Paul Grey from Slipknot passed away.

    RIP \m/

He wrote some of their biggest songs.

He absolutely was the main writing force behind Slayer.

Angel of Death, Raining Blood, South of Heaven, War Ensemble, Dead Skin Mask and Season in the Abyss are probably their six most well known songs and Hanneman wrote the music for all of them.

It sounds like he was still having a lot of trouble recovering from that brown recluse bite a few years ago. That incident plus the decades of alcohol abuse likely brought his body to a breaking point.

Slayer's first five albums are some of the most influential guitar music ever reordered. Right up there with Black Sabbath's Ozzy albums, Judas Priest's first run with Halford and Iron Maiden's Dickinson's era.

"Hell Awaits" will always be my favorite Slayer record. The songwriting on that one had the band at its most advanced and experimental stage.

The great thing about those first five records though is how they are all so different stylistically. Slayer's sound was constantly evolving up until they hit a brick wall in the mid-1990s, just like the majority of their metal colleagues did.

Very sad news. Slayer always ranked high on my list of favorite bands. Some of those records are just insane with the speed in which they played.

Not just played fast but played well. Unlike some bands that can't play their own songs live and/or just make an incoherrent mess seeing how fast they can go failing to maintain any sembelence of rhythm or music.
